Lu Wanchao
Rong Jiang
1.
Lu Wanchao was Rong Jiang's lover for seven years.
Most lovers have a chance to become official, but anyone with eyes could tell that would never happen for Lu Wanchao.
After all, Rong Jiang had had at least five or six lovers, if not ten. The only reason he had kept Lu Wanchao around longer was that the young man was dazzlingly beautiful and never caused trouble.
Until one day, the usually obedient and considerate young man acted completely out of character, turning the villa upside down and insisting on seeing him.
At a banquet, Rong Jiang pressed two fingers against the young man's slender wrist as he offered him a drink, and placated the person on the phone: "I'm busy with work."
"I want you to come back."
That day marked their eighth anniversary, yet the public announcement was that the founder of Rong Group had officially become engaged. His fiancé was the son of a wealthy family, refined and distinguished.
Lu Wanchao stopped stubbornly demanding that he come back. He only pouted and brought up old grievances, saying Rong Jiang had forgotten his birthday, ignored him when he was sick, and had never promised him a future in all eight years. In the end, he had brushed him off only to marry someone else.
Rong Jiang smiled. "A Chao, you're a clever boy. Do I need to clarify our relationship for you again?"
But when he saw Lu Wanchao's body with his own eyes, the young man was clutching the storybook Rong Jiang had given him. His once-innocent, clear eyes were wide open, and there wasn't a trace of life left in his face.
Only when Rong Jiang carried the body to the hospital, nearly insane, and demanded that the doctors save him did he realize that Lu Wanchao wasn't the only one who needed their relationship clarified. He did, too.
2.
Lu Wanchao had transmigrated into this novel eight years ago.
The original character had been kept by the male lead for eight years, used only to satisfy his desires. Unable to accept his place, he fell in love with the male lead and even resorted to any means necessary to break up the male lead and his love interest, leaving the latter gravely injured. When the truth came out, the original character was doomed, dying in disgrace with a lifetime of condemnation.
Lu Wanchao didn't want to die so miserably, so he always followed the rules. But in the end, when he learned that he still couldn't escape having to die to help the male lead and his love interest get married, he simply couldn't keep up the act any longer.
After his death, Lu Wanchao watched from an omniscient perspective as that man rushed toward his corpse like a madman, disheveled like a demon crawling out of hell, his usual composure gone and his eyes bloodshot.
He watched coldly for a long time, as if he were looking at a play that had nothing to do with him.
He had been through it all. It was time to be free, wasn't it?
Just as he was thinking this, Lu Wanchao suddenly opened his eyes.
He was reborn.
3.
Rong Group had been built from nothing over nearly twenty years. Its founder was a formidable business magnate who could navigate the world of commerce with ease. No one could have imagined that he would lose his mind over a young lover,
spend the rest of his life guarding the lover's grave, and remain delirious until the day he died.
When he opened his eyes again, Rong Jiang discovered that he, too, had been reborn.
The lively face sitting before him, playing with building blocks, filled him with such joy that he nearly lost control. He checked again and again, unable to believe it, and called out softly, as though afraid to shatter a dream: "A Chao?"
He had imagined that A Chao would hate him, that he would be repulsed by him.
But he had never imagined this:
Lu Wanchao had lost his memory.
And after Rong Jiang went to great lengths to make A Chao remember him, there was none of the sweet, clinging dependence he'd hoped to see in the young man's eyes. There was only a coldness that felt like falling into an icy abyss.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Rong. I need to clear up a few misunderstandings."
"The past seven years were just an act. You don't need to take them seriously."
"I was born craving pleasure and beautiful people. I won't let myself get trapped in a tragic love song."
