At twenty-six, Bai Yuezhi finally got what was coming to him.
The holes you dig as a kid will eventually come back to bury you!
The four-panel comic he used to doodle during middle school class came true, merging with the world's consciousness just as spiritual qi revival began.
Bai Yuezhi: ?!
The world would end if the comic wasn't completed, but he'd only drawn two chapters.
Worse still, the comic's setting merged with the spiritual qi revival, and the protagonist was killed outright. From there, the plot went completely off the rails
First, the Mystic Order was shaken to its core, the political situation was thrown into turmoil, strange disturbances appeared in the realms of the great demons, and supernatural incidents cropped up everywhere.
Then the bewildered people living in the ordinary world were plunged into disaster. People walking home at night were killed by evil spirits, family members were replaced by vengeful ghosts, strange events plagued schools, and twisted urban legends spread in secret...
One seal after another was broken. The entire world was dragged into hell, the living danced with ghosts, the line between life and death became blurred, and the rules descended into chaos.
The world was doomed.
The Heavenly Dao came knocking, asking Bai Yuezhi to fill in the gaps and save the world.
And so:
[Zombies attack square-dancing grannies, high schooler steps up. Authorities clarify: They're jiangshi!]
[Spiritual qi revival is real! Nine years of compulsory education now includes cultivation techniques!]
[The Classic of Mountains and Seas has been made a required textbook!]
[My dog just started talking. Any idea what's going on, folks?]
[Young man skips class to play games, and his great-grandma, dead for ten years, rises from the ground to slap him across the face!]
Bai Yuezhi diligently put on secret identities, acted out scenes, and filled in the details, all while helping the authorities make the spiritual qi revival public.
Then, to his surprise, everyone's wild speculation added a final villain to the comic: the mastermind behind everything.
Bai Yuezhi took a closer look
The ultimate villain, a psychologically twisted man shaped by his traumatic past, made his grand entrance: it was none other than himself.
Bai Yuezhi, who'd worked so hard to move the plot forward and fill in the gaps: ?
It seemed his comic had a mind of its own.
☆
Everyone goes through a phase of dramatic teenage fantasies. Bai Yuezhi did, too.
Most boys probably imagine that they're secretly an incredibly powerful and handsome big shot: able to cultivate immortality and cast spells, leap across rooftops, speak sixteen languages, and come first in every exam. Today they're the emperor of the night, tomorrow a carefree knight, and the day after that a seemingly cold but secretly tragic assassin or secret agent, bearing a grave mission no one else knows about...
Before he was known as Bai Yuezhi, he used to dream of sweeping away all the cruelty and wrongdoing around him.
But unlike everyone else, his fantasies came true.
At seven years old, he looked through a narrow window and met his own gaze.
That was the bird that had flown out of his dreams. It knew every skill he knew, and even the absurd, exaggerated wishes of a child came true, one by one.
Little by little, he perfected another version of himself and broadened his understanding of the world. He ventured outside, just as he'd always hoped, and pulled himself out of the swamp.
[Note]
1. The protagonist is the gong. Bai Yuezhi is the gong (the original self). The secret identities have romantic entanglements; some secret identities may be torn away. They all share one mind. The supernatural elements are entirely made up, and the protagonist remains top-tier in combat ability.
2. It's like doing several things at once: another version of oneself in the world.
3. This is purely an indulgence piece, with no real-life inspirations. My take on supernatural lore + a sweet selfcest story.
