For the third time this month, Jiang Fu was cornered at the school gate by idle thugs who harassed and threatened her. She decided to keep a dog by her side.
A vicious dog.
One that only had to stand there to make people wary, putting a deep divide between her and everyone else.
A watchdog didn't need to be pretty, clever, or opinionated. It didn't even need to be loyal.
"It" only needed to stay there, by her side, baring its fangs at anyone who dared approach. That was enough.
Jiang Fu would keep this dog by her side.
--Until the day she could escape this ignorant, backward little town, break free from her stifling school, cut ties with her sickening family, and begin a new life.
