Dreaming in the Tropics [Not Related by Blood]

◆ Nanyang-inspired fake siblings / Reunion after a long separation / Stealing someone's partner

Ten years ago, Qu Mingze left for Hong Kong, leaving eighteen-year-old Liang Jiazhen alone in the old house, like a forsaken ghost.

Ten years later, a letter brings them face-to-face at the old house. Qu Mingze is still alone, but Liang Jiazhen now has a boyfriend who is inseparable from her.

Qu Mingze puts on the stern air of an elder he hasn't used in years and forbids them from living together.

Liang Jiazhen ignores him and teases her boyfriend: "If he counts as my older brother, then you do too."

The saccharine lilt of her voice stretches on and on, like a caterpillar wrapped around his heart, prickling and itching.

At midnight, suggestive sounds come from the bedroom on the other side of the wall.

In the dark, Qu Mingze stares at the ceiling, her different expressions surfacing in his mind.

In that moment, he feels weighed down by sin, despicable and vulgar.

Vines lose their moisture and turn to dead grass; lives cut loose from family become duckweed.

The cycle of cause and effect in our green veins still brings us back in dreams, even a hundred years later.

And all we can do is sink twenty thousand leagues beneath the sea and love each other in the dark abyss.

* No blood or family relation, and they are not on the same household registration
