Half a Poem

At thirteen, Chen Jian gave all her teachers a headache. She was bad at some subjects, rebellious, and full of mischief. Lately, she'd also gotten into writing poetry.

Her history teacher wrote the first half of a poem in her notebook: "A cup of water soothes the heart, a noble spirit conquers Chang'an." Then the teacher said that if she got into high school, they'd help her finish the second half.

But Chen Jian failed the high school entrance exam.

Years later, she got into university. The first half of the poem was still there in that yellowed notebook. She had filled in the second half with her own life.
