The Husband of the Foil in a Period Novel

In a story set in a bygone era, supporting character Li Xiangmei was given a husband who was a good-for-nothing with every vice, simply because she had once been the female lead's rival in love.

In the end, covered in scars and consumed by despair, Li Xiangmei drowned herself in a lake, her misery a stark contrast to the female lead's happiness.

When Liang Jingsheng transmigrated into the story, the supporting character was about to give birth to her third child. She was being chased by family-planning officers, and her good-for-nothing husband had just abandoned her by the roadside. Fleeing in panic, the man plunged headfirst into a lake. When he woke up again, he had become Liang Jingsheng, a model young man from the 21st century.

At the hospital, in the depths of winter, Li Xiangmei had just given birth. Barefoot, she cradled a tiny, dark, shriveled baby girl.

The female lead, Hong Yunxia, was wrapped in a bright red padded jacket. She stood nearby, comforting Li Xiangmei, while her successful husband stood beside her.

"Don't worry. I already told the family-planning officer I'd cover your fine this time. You can pay me back whenever. As for Liang, I'll talk him into coming back and living with you. You have three children now, so there really needs to be a man in the house... Oh? Liang? You're here?"

"Mm. I'm here to take Xiangmei home."

Everyone thought that Li Xiangmei had given birth to another girl and borrowed money to pay her fine, so Liang Jingsheng would surely beat her again when they got home.

He might even beat her to death. Poor thing.

Early the next morning, a group of people went to see Li Xiangmei's miserable state. But when they pushed open the door, they saw her lying in a bed piled with soft white quilts, carefully sipping a bowl of fragrant chicken soup.
