My 1997

Li Misu never imagined that the wheels of fate would start turning the moment an engineer came to stay at her home.

Li Misu belonged to a special group: migrants forced to leave their homes to make way for water-resource development.

"Will things get better in the future?"

"You've had a hard life. You lost your mother as a child, your father in your youth, your husband in middle age, and your son in old age. You're destined to be a solitary star, bringing misfortune to everyone around you."

Li Misu smiled unconcernedly, took out fifty yuan, and set it down. Then she got up and left, ignoring the fortune-teller calling after her to stop and claiming he knew how to undo her fate.

She had never believed in fate. She believed only in herself. From having nothing to owning her own clothing brand, she had made it with her own two hands.
