Evelyn, transmigrating for the first time, found herself penniless. Gazing up at Gotham City's gloomy gray sky, she thought she'd landed in a superhero story, so she decided to whip up a few secret identities to punish evil (rob the bad guys) and promote good (rob the bad guys), earning enough to support herself.
·
Among her secret identities were:
A brusque engineer who carried a huge iron hammer;
A strange man who wore a robe to conceal his bizarre appearance;
A puppeteer dressed in black who controlled a bride doll;
A tall, gorgeous vampire with bewitching beauty;
·
·
Thoughtful Evelyn even gave each secret identity a fitting name, and included herself in the lineup.
By day, she was an anonymous temp reporter at a newspaper. By night, she was Miranda, the mother goddess of Gotham's rising stars.
Punishing evil, helping the good, robbing the rich to help the poor. Just thinking about it was thrilling.
·
Just as Evelyn was rubbing her hands together, ready to go out and compete with Gotham's vigilantes for work, she suddenly realized that perhaps the story she'd landed in wasn't about superheroes battling supervillains.
·
It was a horrific game of survival.
·
·
The neighbor on her left bought an hideously ugly doll named Annabelle. The neighbor on her right received a puppet called Billy.
Both neighbors' wives very warmly invited her to a tea party for their dolls.
·
The newspaper where she worked held a reunion at the home of a staff member's relative. When she got there, she found it deep in the mountains, with the basement piled high with monster mystery boxes.
After escaping with her life, she settled in a rural town, only to discover that the whole place was filled with fake people cast in wax.
·
And that wasn't all.
Eight pages she casually picked up at a campground summoned a faceless, suited, long-limbed man. A videotape her coworker played during a night shift crawled out a long-haired female ghost. While investigating a restaurant for a story, she got trapped by a blizzard in the mountains...
·
Even the criminals she ran into while trying to beat the vigilantes to the job were things like chainsaw-wielding killers and clowns crawling out of the sewers.
·
·
·
Evelyn had only wanted to get famous and make money. She'd had enough.
·
She'd made up her mind. Tonight, she'd sing to Mary Shaw, and nobody was going to stop her!
·
