“The strongest in the shadows is a supporting character.”
Kageno Minoru knew this principle inside out. Even sitting by the window in the back row, he kept a low profile and stayed out of trouble. Whenever a case came up, he was the sort of passerby whose name the detective would never remember.
But that was only on the surface.
Whenever night fell, he became a shadow slipping through the darkness, wiping out every evil he came across.
Over time, every criminal who saw him would address him with fear and trembling:
“Shadow.”
The self-proclaimed “Shadow” soon attracted the attention of countless factions. People from all sides began investigating this newcomer, and they quickly discovered that Shadow’s actions were no baseless claims: his words were all true.
A mysterious supernatural organization plotting to rewrite the world.
Unknown curse users who had coveted the Heavenly Origin and lain hidden for a thousand years.
Crows that roamed the night, cawing of death.
Every prophecy Shadow made came true.
But whether it was a young Mafia executive who infiltrated the group to investigate, or a sorcerer torn between conflicting ideals, they were both baptized in darkness. Without warning, they defected and joined the shadows, becoming faithful believers in Shadow’s ideals.
Only after continuing their investigation did people discover that the organization under Shadow, known as the “Shadow Garden,” had already spread far and wide and gained enough power to rival any other faction. Its leader, Shadow himself, was even more unfathomable.
A rumor began circulating through the city:
Lord Shadow is so powerful, his combat strength rivals a nuclear bomb.
Lord Shadow is so mysterious, he can unravel any plot or conspiracy.
Lord Shadow has such vast influence that his subordinates are everywhere, from north to south, east to west.
In short, whatever happens, all you need to do is exclaim, “Just as you’d expect of Lord Shadow!”
Lord Shadow’s famous quotes were even more widely known:
“I am Shadow, lurking in the dark, hunting those who dwell within it.”
“Let every sin in this world come for us. We shall shoulder it all, and that will be nothing more than doing what we must.”
Everyone believed that Lord Shadow must be burdened by a great mission and immense suffering, and that his mission would not end until every evil in the world had been eradicated.

But Kageno Minoru, who only wanted to become the strongest in the shadows, noticed that the people playing along with his chuuni games seemed to be getting strange.
The bandage-wrapped weirdo he had turned to his side, who was always shouting about wanting to kill himself, would occasionally give him a sinister look;
The weird-haired high schooler he had chatted with a couple of times had led a whole bunch of people from some Star Religious Group to convert to Shadow;
The two-toned-haired book-made human he had picked up on a whim, the Heavenly Restriction user who had made a perfectly reasonable contract with him but eventually joined with his whole family in tow, the cat-eyed Scotch who had gone undercover...
Everyone seemed to believe every random thing he made up, and they had spent years playing chuuni games with him without getting bored!
As the Shadow Garden grew at a dizzying pace, his friends pushed him to heights he had no business reaching. Shadow’s followers were everywhere he went.
Kageno Minoru clung tightly to his identity as an ordinary person.
This is bad, this is bad. Chuuni syndrome is contagious!
