At the start of the second semester of his junior year, Ye Xingchen arrived as a visiting student for a year and became Jiang Zhiyu's new deskmate and roommate.

His new deskmate was smart.

His new deskmate was cute.

The night before, his new deskmate had witnessed Jiang Zhiyu's one and only act of "heroism."

As class monitor, Jiang Zhiyu took care of Ye Xingchen at every turn, all in the spirit of looking out for a classmate.

But at the sports festival, Jiang Zhiyu and Ye Xingchen raced across the finish line in the three-legged race, only to fail to stop in time and tumble together onto the mats.

The sun was shining, and for no reason at all, Jiang Zhiyu's heart began to race.

*

Ye Xingchen liked playing the pixel game Snake. Whenever he had some free time, he would clutch his handheld console, unable to put it down.

Curious, Jiang Zhiyu asked why he was so fond of the game.

Ye Xingchen said, "Because Snake is like me. Every little dot is like someone I've met and gotten to know."

The little snake on the screen ate a heart, and the display showed that it had gained an extra life.

Jiang Zhiyu pressed him: What does the heart represent?

Ye Xingchen shook his head. "I don't know. Maybe I haven't met it yet."

He found out soon enough.

On the day Ye Xingchen returned to his old school, Jiang Zhiyu, as class monitor, gave him a notebook filled with messages from all their classmates. Jiang Zhiyu's own words were on the last page, just one short line.

"I'll wait for you to tell me what your heart is."

*

A snake eating a heart is just like me meeting you.

1. A sweet, everyday school-life story, 1v1, happy ending.

2. Both leads are adults from the start.

3. [Please note] The school setting may be a little idealized. I hope you won't overthink it. Just enjoy the story, and feel free to drop it if it's not for you.
