Coming soon: "Bend at the Waist", a deranged sister-in-law vs. a rough older brother-in-law (see my author page)

1.
Shen Jiaojiao was the daughter of a once-prominent family in Ningjiang City. She had been engaged to Yuan Fang since childhood. After her mother died, her father brought home one concubine after another and even took a secondary wife. To escape their mistreatment, she married Yuan Fang at a young age.
A young couple should have stood by each other, but Yuan Fang ran away from home several times, saying he only thought of Shen Jiaojiao as a younger sister and that his mother had arranged the marriage.
At the center of the storm, she survived only thanks to her mother-in-law's protection.
2.
Yuan Fang's father died when he was young, and his mother, Madam Su, held the family together. The Yuan family had a military background, and the only way Yuan Fang could restore its former glory was to join the army. But his mother wanted to keep him tied down, confined to the bedroom and back courtyard.
She forced him to marry, made him give up the military for the civil service, and demanded that he settle down and produce an heir.
Yet Yuan Fang had no interest in his new bride. She was timid and dull, spending all day fussing over flowers and plants, and speaking in a feeble voice. He had only married her because he had pitied her since childhood, thinking of her as a younger sister with nowhere else to go.
Leaving his lovely wife at home to keep his mother company, Yuan Fang cheerfully went off to make his mark in the army. Three years later, he had earned his glory and brought back a woman as well. She was pregnant, and he wanted to divorce his wife and marry her instead.
3.
When Shen Jiao heard that her husband had a mistress, she had planned to welcome the woman into the household. But the mistress refused to accept her, wouldn't serve her tea or show respect to her mother-in-law, and declared that General Yuan had only one wife: her.
Yuan Fang wanted to divorce her, and she had no way to stop him.
That night, she clutched the divorce papers and fled.
Early the next morning, two bright red bridal sedan chairs entered the He residence from Shen Jiao's rear courtyard, carrying two people. They said the second young master of the He family, He Lanzhi, needed a joyous wedding to bring him good fortune as he practiced as a lay Buddhist.
After Shen Jiao remarried, the very second young master who had once mistreated her doted on her endlessly. Yuan Fang was so jealous he could bleed, insisting that the divorce papers were fake and that Shen Jiao still belonged to the Yuan household.
He Lanzhi gently stroked Shen Jiaojiao's belly and said, "But she's carrying my child. General Yuan, have you gotten addicted to raising other people's sons?"
Shen Jiao: ...
