The cold white-coated staff always screamed and ran away, then locked it even deeper inside. Until one day, a strange human became its handler. Every day, he made it read books and newspapers and learn how to behave like a person. Even if it got a little too close and was sent back to the respawn point, it would come right back to life the next day and appear in front of him again. Zero really liked this handler and shared its hobbies with him every day, even though it once crushed him to death while tearing down a door. It enthusiastically invited him to join its gossip club, then ate him until not even a scrap was left when its instinct to devour kicked in because he was too close. It raced out the door to welcome him, then got locked deeper and deeper inside after the System flagged it as a flight risk. It never got tired of it. Until one day, the research facility was empty. Zero burst out, but the System no longer sounded. It smashed countless doors and couldn't find a single human. It climbed up, level by level, until it reached the surface. Amid the dead-silent ruins, it looked up at a television playing a recording high above. The hideous evil god grinned wickedly, its eight tentacles writhing in a frenzy. “The uncanny have descended and taken over the entire human world. The world belongs to us. Humanity has been utterly defeated!” The Uncanny Calamity: Apocalyptic Survival Game was a full-dive online game released by Konoha Games. It became a sensation as soon as it launched, and every uncanny NPC was so ugly it sent players' sanity plummeting. The most famous was the ultimate boss, Zero, a dark-red monster with web-like tentacles. It wasn't famous because it was ugly, but because the whole world envied it. It had exclusive CGs and skins from the entire game company, was lavishly raised by the research prodigy Qin Zui, and had the whole company dedicated to serving it. But just as the game was thriving and taking the world by storm, Konoha Games had a brain freeze and released a bad ending in which humanity went extinct and the uncanny took over. The game shut down and mysteriously disappeared. The once-cold and imposing Qin Zui became even colder. Everyone was too frightened to say a word. Until one day, the big shot returned from a research conference to find a young man blocking his doorway. The young man was disheveled, as though he had been walking for a very long time, and his delicate features looked worn and weary.
