People of the time said General Mingxiang fawned on those above her and bullied those below, siding with allies and persecuting rivals. Even with the emperor's favor, she was destined not to live long.
Truthfully, Mingxiang had never cared much whether she met a violent death or died peacefully.
When she was young, General Mingxiang had once been Princess Mingxiang.
Back then, she had lived amid splendor and wealth, raised in luxury in a magnificent realm. Then enemy forces stormed the capital, and the land fell to ruin. Her mother could only hide her behind a screen. She watched blood spray from her mother's neck as her elder brother, the crown prince, shielded her, crawling on his knees beneath their attackers and kowtowing eighty-one times, begging them to spare her life.
Later, her brother could no longer bear the humiliation and took his own life in the cold palace. Mingxiang, one eye gouged out, climbed out of a mountain of corpses and finally found a chance to escape the imperial city with her personal attendant.
In the forest, she watched a tiger tear off the eunuch's leg. Her attendant held her hand and said, "Don't cry. Go south. Your elder sister, the one you were sent to marry, is in Nanzhao. Your Highness, stay alive."
Mingxiang went.
But too many people in Nanzhao hated her. They despised her glamorous, beautiful past and scorned her for her missing eye. Countless times, Mingxiang was thrown into the mud, and countless times, she struggled back to her feet.
Later, Mingxiang returned to the battlefield and fell into a trap. She fought for three days with her personal guards and gave her life for her country. In the end, the prophecy came true: she died a terrible death.
This time, the gods and heavens finally showed her mercy, sending her back to the palace of her homeland in her youth.
Time turned back, and she dreamed of days gone by. Mingxiang hesitantly stepped into the hall and saw her mother embrace a boy. Her brother bent down and called him "little brother," while her eunuch stood off to the side, smiling as he watched them enjoy their family reunion.
She had swallowed the bitter fruit of her splendid childhood. Fire had consumed her, and grief had torn her apart. She had clung to life and made it back to the past, only to have an outsider steal her life away.
But even with the tender hands of a six-year-old, Mingxiang could no longer kill.
The Heavenly Dao said the boy came from a thousand years in the future. He would take her place, win the love of the enemy nation's ruler, and save her homeland from destruction. He would take her place in Nanzhao, becoming the white moonlight the emperor could never have. He would win everyone's love and turn her wretched life around.
Mingxiang felt her eyes grow wet. She raised a hand to wipe them, only to find blood tears running down her face.
Princess Mingxiang had poured all her heart and strength into her life. At last, she had been lucky enough to return to the past and rewrite her fate, only to discover that an outsider had stolen everything from her.
But she had committed countless sins and had never been weak. Even if the Heavenly Dao stood by and did nothing, she would take matters into her own hands, break through their fading memories, and restore this absurd world to what it had been.
---Mingxiang grew up wild amid mountains of corpses and seas of blood. She had never relied on anyone's pity or affection.
And that cunning thief, showered with love and pampering, would never be allowed to leave so easily.
