Blurb: [The main story remains unchanged. The male lead is a love-starved, unloving, powerful yet tragic madman. This blurb is provisional and may be revised later.]
Fu Nian picked up a little beggar. Though life with her was hardly any better than life on the streets, at least she had saved him. That's what she thought, anyway.
Even when she came into an immense fortune and was recognized as the daughter of the Minister of Revenue, Fu Nian still stuck to the principle of not forgetting old friends when she got rich and didn't abandon him.
Sometimes, the sudden riches may have gone to her head a little. She occasionally sent the little beggar off to rob people and do things against his conscience. But she always shared the spoils with him. Fu Nian felt that she had treated him fairly, at least that's what she thought.
Even later, while they were fleeing, she shared her food and bed with him, and even saved his life several times. But Fu Nian never imagined that one day this ungrateful, profit-hungry, tradition-betraying, heartless bastard would try to skin her alive, eat her flesh, and drain her blood to save the woman he loved!
When she saw that bastard of a man rushing toward her, covered in blinding red and looking a complete mess, she remembered that today was also the grand day of the new emperor of Great Wei's coronation ceremony for his empress.
Two celebrations at once, a double stroke of good fortune. What a perfect day. She should congratulate him.
Watching the new emperor of Great Wei stumble toward her from afar, reaching out as if desperately trying to grasp something, Fu Nian seemed to see that little beggar again, trapped in the mud all those years ago, reaching out to her just like this. He clearly wanted to live, yet his expression held the resigned understanding that he had accepted his fate. Though he thought she wouldn't save him, a faint glimmer of hope still lingered in his eyes.
What was he so desperate about now? What was he hoping for? He already had everything.
He sat on the highest throne in the land, had the love of his life, and had killed the person he hated most. By all accounts, he should have been the most pleased man alive.
Before her consciousness faded, Fu Nian felt a little regret. If she could start over, she'd kick him a few more times, send him tumbling all the way down, and then throw a few big rocks on top of him.
As she thought of it, a bitter smile tugged at her lips.
She must have been delirious. How could someone with a fate like his be killed by a nobody like her, someone insignificant in any world?
But if she could live it all over again, she wouldn't choose to meet him.
