*The first time Yan Xi saw Lu Tingzhou was in the hallway outside a club. He wore a custom-tailored suit and leaned against the wall, smoking. The dim light blurred his outline, but Yan Xi could still see his indifferent expression. To the woman confessing her love to him, he said just four words: "I'm not interested." Then he stubbed out his cigarette and walked away.
Yan Xi thought at the time: What would it feel like to drag Lu Tingzhou down from his pedestal, watch him bend for love, then turn and leave?
*The second time they met, she was interviewing Lu Tingzhou as a journalist. After the interview, Yan Xi asked him a question:
"Mr. Lu, could someone like you ever bend down for one person, and willingly submit to love?"
Lu Tingzhou's gaze fell on her face, his expression unreadable.
Everyone around them sucked in a worried breath on Yan Xi's behalf, but Lu Tingzhou simply chuckled and said:
"Why don't you try, Reporter Yan? See if you can become that person."
His tone was ambiguous.
The next day, when Yan Xi left her home, she saw Lu Tingzhou's car parked downstairs.
He was leaning against it, waiting for her. Yan Xi walked over and asked why he was there.
Lu Tingzhou made no effort to hide his intentions. Looking at Yan Xi, he said, "Didn't Reporter Yan want to see what I look like when I bend for love?"
Yan Xi glanced at him, then got into his car.
*Yan Xi once encountered a warm light, but that light went out because of Lu Tingzhou's arrival. So when Lu Tingzhou appeared before her, she wanted to pull him down from his pedestal, cover him in mud, and plunge him into darkness.
Later, she got her wish.
In the pouring rain, she watched Lu Tingzhou hold up an umbrella, clinging to the last shred of his dignity as he asked her, "Yan Xi, did you really never love me?"
The rain poured down, but the umbrella in Lu Tingzhou's hand remained angled toward Yan Xi.
Yet after looking at him, Yan Xi only said two words: "Never did." Then she turned and walked into the rainy night.
A year later, Yan Xi saw a line of writing on a wishing wall she'd once visited with Lu Tingzhou:
"You pretended to love me so convincingly. How could I bear to let you lose?"
