Zheng Zhenghao was born in a major gaokao province in central China, but ever since he was little, he'd been determined to get into Tsinghua or Peking University.
He nearly killed himself studying to get into the second-best high school in the city. Once he realized how hard it was to get into either of those universities from his province, he became a full-fledged hater.
Naturally, he also hated the transfer student from the capital.
He hated that the transfer student didn't have to get up at five and stay up until midnight like he used to, and that his future plans involved agonizing over whether to study abroad in Britain or the United States.
Most of all, he hated that the transfer student came second in the grade on his very first monthly exam.
Just ten points behind Zheng Zhenghao.
So even though they were deskmates, Zheng Zhenghao decided that from now on, whenever the transfer student came to ask him questions, invited him to eat in the cafeteria, or wanted to walk home with him after school, he would give him the cold shoulder and turn him down. Every single time.
That's how twisted he was. That's how evil. That's how terrifying!
Looking at the monthly exam rankings, Zheng Zhenghao thought, it starts now.
The day after he made up his mind, Zheng Zhenghao saw the transfer student surrounded by a group of punks outside school.
He grabbed a broom and, relying on the flashy moves he'd picked up during a summer spent training at Shaolin Temple in elementary school, wielded it in a series of staff techniques that successfully scared the punks off.
Holding the broom, Zheng Zhenghao pointed at the transfer student's ranking sheet on the ground. The transfer student had emphatically circled the name in first place: Zheng Zhenghao.
"Still chasing me?" Zheng Zhenghao saw right through his desire to surpass him. He lifted his chin and shamelessly demanded repayment for his good deed on the spot.
The transfer student's dark eyes shifted from the list to Zheng Zhenghao's face. After a long pause, he said quietly, "I am."
Not chasing the ranking. Chasing you.
