Pei Mo heard that when she was a baby, the elders in her family had arranged a childhood betrothal for her at her first-birthday banquet with a friend. It had been a joke and never meant to be taken seriously, so she hadn't thought much of it.
Then one day, the old master of Lingcheng's prominent Jiang family brought his grandson back from overseas. She heard that the grandson, though young, already controlled the entire Jiang Corporation, and was ruthless, steady, and decisive.
But that day, in a small garden, Pei Mo saw the man who had occupied her thoughts throughout her youth.
He stood tall and elegant, with a pair of soulful eyes. The summer breeze ruffled his hair, and he looked just as noble and immaculate as she remembered.
And he still gave off that faint air of distance from deep within.
After they married.
Yu Jingze was the very picture of a good husband, treating her with the utmost care. Everyone loved to talk about how well-matched their families were.
But Pei Mo knew he had married her to put the ailing old Master Jiang at ease. He treated her well out of a sense of responsibility.
There wasn't a trace of affection in it.
Until one day, he held her on his lap and kissed her, his voice helpless yet sincere. "Mo Mo, can't you tell whether I like you?"
Pei Mo tugged at his perfectly straight tie. "If you don't say it... how am I supposed to know?"
"I don't say it, hm?"
He was always so good at teasing her that she couldn't help her lashes trembling. "You didn't say it today."
Hearing that, Yu Jingze chuckled softly. "In that case, I suppose it really is my fault."
He kissed her in the most innocent way. "I like you today, too."
[Bonus scene]
The two held their wedding after Pei Mo graduated. The night before, at a hotel by the sea, their friends set off fireworks and egged Yu Jingze on to confess his love to his wife in three lines.
The man looked at the gentle girl and said softly, "How could I sleep without seeing you smile?"
The people nearby were so overwhelmed by the sweetness that they clenched their fists and cried, "Second line!"
Yu Jingze lowered his gaze. "I want to brag about every gentle thing you do."
Someone couldn't help teasing him. "Mr. Yu, where did you learn to say things like that?"
"They're lyrics my wife likes. They struck a chord with me."
"They're lyrics, so they don't count."
Pei Mo, who had been looking at him the whole time, smiled. "They count."
The man who had always protected her smiled too, taking her hand with its wedding ring.
Fireworks blossomed over the sea, and his voice fell softly beside her ear. "The third line is my own confession."
He gazed deeply into her eyes. "You can stand on your own, but for the rest of my life, I'll be someone you can rely on."

[My next novel will be A Fairytale in a Dream]
On a summer night after the college entrance exams, Su Yaoxin was leaving a classmate's house when she met a handsome guy while carpooling.
The boy was leaning against the back seat, dressed in a black jacket and black pants. A black baseball cap was pulled low beneath the hood of his jacket. He had pale skin and an especially handsome jawline.
One glance at his profile was enough for Su Yaoxin to know he was exactly her type.
Though she wasn't good at approaching people, that day she managed to get his WeChat.
Later, Su Yaoxin discovered that the guy she'd approached was the academic ace of their joint high school exams.
Later still, she discovered that the driver she'd carpooled with that day was his friend.
One day after they got together, she found a photo of herself on the boy's phone. It showed her as a cheerleader at a citywide high school basketball tournament during her first year of high school.
When she questioned him, Qi Yi calmly admitted, "Yeah, I've liked you for a long time."
"Then why did you make me chase you?"
The boy popped a strawberry into her mouth. His handsome eyes crinkled with amusement as he corrected her. "To be precise, I taught you how to chase me."
A cool, flirtatious guy and a cute, looks-obsessed girl
Qi Yi had been a campus celebrity since his first year of university, and he looked a little hard to approach. Someone asked his driver friend, "What's he like?"
His friend said, "He's easygoing, gentle, and spoils his girlfriend. He can be a little mischievous sometimes."
"Are you sure you're talking about him?"
"You'll see after spending a few days with him," his friend added. "He's a total lovesick fool."
