She died twice, and both times he brought her back.
But he couldn't save himself.
“I realized that no matter what I did, I couldn't catch the bullets. So I decided to become the one holding the gun instead.”
That's what he said on the day he fell. After that, he gave up his singing career and retreated behind the scenes.
Hidden among the sea of people, she held the press pass she'd just received. The lyrics that had kept her company through countless dark nights were burned before her eyes by his own hand.
No, not before her eyes. Back then, she wasn't qualified to be there. She was just one of millions of fans watching him say goodbye to the music scene.
Three years later, one fan account after another called for his return to music. He remained behind the scenes, not even letting anyone catch sight of a single strand of his hair.
Then one day, a familiar, slender figure wearing a mask appeared at the newspaper office, carrying a takeout meal and a folder. An old fan who recognized him burst into tears, covered her mouth, and approached him, her voice choked with emotion. “Excuse me, are you Lan Suijue?”
He calmly took off his mask, smiling with the same warm yet distant composure as always. “Yes. Could you please call Dai Kui for me? I'm her boyfriend. She forgot this file when she left.”
Overnight, Dai Kui, an entertainment reporter at a small-time entertainment newspaper, gained a million followers. In the comments of a post she'd made three days earlier, Lan Suijue's fans all left messages:
“We're begging you, sister-in-law! Please get my idol to return to music!”
“I realized I still couldn't catch those bullets, but you taught me how to build my own armor.”
