They say the blind man, the one everyone walks all over, picked up a mute boy from the battlefield at the foot of the mountain.
The boy has handsome brows and bright eyes, but he's mute. Some villagers joke that the blind man picked up a mute, so now they can marry each other. Others say two men can't get married, and someone replies that it doesn't stop them from fooling around.
The rumors reach the blind man's ears, as they always do. He smiles faintly, as usual, and treats them as idle gossip.
But unlike the mild-mannered blind man, the mute boy he's brought home has a rather bad temper.
The next day, all the thugs and ruffians who love to gossip are poisoned mute overnight. With his hands behind his back, the mute boy strides briskly through the crowd, grinning.
Overnight, everyone learns to keep their mouths shut.
The blind man still goes about his day as usual, making tea and cooking, smiling warmly. "Little mute, come eat."

Mu Yizhi knows this mute boy is no ordinary person, and that one day he'll leave. He has no desire to provoke this vicious madman.
He's waited a whole year for that day, and the madman has finally decided to leave.
On the day he goes, Mu Yizhi still carries himself with the grace of a moonlit breeze. Leaning on a wooden cane in the doorway, he bids him farewell with an otherworldly air. "Little mute, take good care of yourself when you get back. Don't come back to a place like this."
The mute boy leans idly against the doorframe, twirling an exquisite dagger in his hand. He smiles, his eyes narrowing slightly, and then, as if a ghost has just spoken, he says, "Brother Yizhi, are you really that eager to send me away?"
At his words, Mu Yizhi's ever-present smile vanishes in an instant. He nearly spits up a mouthful of blood, then grits his teeth and says, "Xiao Huaixu! How is it you, you little menace? Get out!"
Xiao Huaixu smiles faintly. "It's me, your little menace. But, Brother Yizhi, you know that ever since we were children, I've always done the opposite of whatever you say."
Mu Yizhi huffs angrily and turns to go inside, tapping his cane. But Xiao Huaixu suddenly sweeps an arm around him, hoists him over his shoulder, and shoves him into a carriage.
Xiao Huaixu suddenly realizes that the years when no one was there to oppose him had felt wrong in every way. Now that his sworn rival is back, everything feels right again. Even the sound of him cursing is like heavenly music to his ears.
Xiao Huaixu doesn't care what he says. He'll drag him back to the Eastern Palace, even if he has to tie him up.
