Climbing the Social Ladder in a Period Novel

Because of her breathtaking beauty, Nan Xi was adopted at twelve by the wealthy Fang family of Yangzhou. The Fangs hired tutors to teach her music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, as well as skincare and beauty techniques. They planned to present her to powerful officials as a rare commodity when the time came.

The day before she was to be presented to the crown prince, an accident occurred.

When she awoke again, Nan Xi had become a young woman named Nan Xi in Wangjia Village in the 1970s. Her family was full of people counting on her to marry into a powerful family and help them make their way back to the capital.

After all, she was the prettiest one in the family.

The Nan family had been dealt a miserable hand. Nan Xi's mother was reported by the man who shared her bed, bringing ruin upon the whole family and getting them sent to a labor camp for reform. Meanwhile, Nan Xi's faithless father married the daughter of the Nan family's enemies, and the three of them lived happily ever after.

With no way out, the Nan family decided to put all their hopes in Nan Xi, whose beauty was astonishing.

Her maternal grandmother taught her how to pick handsome, high-quality men.

Her aunt taught her how to care for her skin and preserve her beauty.

Her mother taught her how to dress herself and work her way into their social circles.

Nan Xi waved a hand. None of that was a problem. She knew all about marrying up.
