Everyone in Chang'an knows how much Gu Wanwan loves Rong Yu.
Rong Yu's father was convicted of treason for colluding with the enemy, and the entire Rong family was exiled to the frontier. The Gu and Rong families had arranged a betrothal when they were young, and Gu Wanwan gave up everything at home to follow Rong Yu so she could marry him.
After twelve years on the frontier, the Great Wei dynasty fell into turmoil. Rong Yu returned to Chang'an, killed his enemies with his own hands, and became a powerful court official. Gu Wanwan thought their hardships were finally over, only to discover that he had long loved someone else. He wanted to divorce her and marry the cousin he had always yearned for.
Gu Wanwan was heartbroken.
At dawn on a spring day, the very day the Rong family was to be exiled, Rong Yu exposed the conspiracy and cleared his family's name.
He also brought his marriage to Gu Wanwan back onto the agenda. But he never expected that on their wedding night, Gu Wanwan would take a dagger and stab him in the chest. “Rong Yu, this is what you owe me.”
In her previous life, Rong Yu had taken the life-saving medicine meant for her mother to please his cousin, and Gu Wanwan died with hatred in her heart.
Rong Yu coughed up a mouthful of blood and touched her face. “Wanwan, this stab repays you. Now we're even. Can we start over?”
Gu Wanwan removed her headdress and stood up expressionlessly. “Rong Yu, I don't love you anymore.”
