I Have No Choice but to Obey

While Xue Mei was alive, the late emperor entrusted the young emperor to him, and he helped the boy rule the court.

By day, he was the aloof, untouchable Grand Tutor, lofty above all others.

At night, after everyone was dismissed from the imperial bedchamber, he would lie on the broad, soft dragon bed.

In an imperious voice, he would order the young emperor to stay by his side night after night.

He was domineering, forceful, and possessive to a fault.

He forbade the young emperor from favoring anyone else. No one was allowed.

Eight years later, the young emperor, who had been biding his time, finally purged him from the court.

When one emperor rises, his predecessor's ministers fall. Xue Mei had served as a powerful official under two emperors, and was sentenced to drink a cup of poison.

When the ruler orders a minister to die, the minister has no choice but to obey.

As he faced death, Xue Mei hoped the young emperor would personally feed him the poison.

To his surprise, the emperor really did raise the cup to his lips.

The treacherous minister Xue Mei died at the hands of the young emperor he had devoted himself to serving and raised himself.

When he opened his eyes again, he found himself a beautiful male concubine in a prince's manor, frail and delicate.

Seated before a bronze mirror, Xue Mei gazed at the sickly face, which resembled his own by thirty percent, and gave a bitter smile.

The powerful minister who once held sway over the court had fallen to the status of a male concubine.

The prince treated him well. Knowing he was frail, he never forced him to do anything.

But it was precisely this special affection that brought him back into the young emperor's sight.

The young emperor fixed his gaze on him and ordered, "You, lift your head."

Xue Mei refused, hiding behind the prince.

But what awaited him was an imperial edict summoning him to the palace.

When the ruler gives an order, a minister has no choice but to obey.
