Ming Qiao has an abundance of admirers, and gets as far as discussing marriage with three outstanding men in succession.
The first was her cousin's classmate. He was not only exceptionally talented, but also owned a house and shops, had no living parents, and had official connections. Sadly, on the very day he placed third in the palace examinations, a princess swooped in and stole him away.
The second was the Marquis of Jianchang. Though she would be his second wife, she could become a mother without the pain of childbirth, and her mother-in-law was bedridden after a stroke and needed no tending. But the marquis had an affair before the wedding. Ming Qiao witnessed it with her own eyes and couldn't just pretend she hadn't, so the engagement had to be called off.
The third was a Grand Secretary's son. She thought that with a Grand Secretary vouching for his character, surely this time there'd be no problem. Who knew this one would be even worse? His admirer chased her for eight whole blocks, trying to chop her down.
Ming Qiao: ...Why is it so hard to get married?
Fortunately, Ming Qiao did get married after all. An imperial edict arranging the match sent her straight into the Prince Regent's residence.
It wasn't until much later that Ming Qiao learned the truth: good grief, all three of her would-be suitors had been ruthlessly cut down by the Prince Regent.
*
Rumor had it that the Prince Regent was capricious and cruel, wantonly violent, bloodthirsty, and heartless. He had even sent his own mother to the Cold Palace.
When Ming Qiao first met him, she thought the rumors weren't entirely true. His expression was cold, but he was a gentleman, disciplined and impeccably courteous.
After spending some time with him, Ming Qiao began to suspect that the Prince Regent might be treating her as a substitute for someone else.
It wasn't until the Prince Regent squeezed her until her eyes rolled back and demanded to know whether she remembered that Ming Qiao finally understood. He was a madman, the sort who could snap at any moment.
Ming Qiao: I can't live like this!

A completed novel in a similar vein: After Our Family Transmigrated, My Dad Rose to Become Chief Grand Secretary
Song Yingshu's family mysteriously transmigrated while on vacation, taking over the bodies of a family of three in ancient times.
They started out by splitting up the family household. Before they could even celebrate, though, they realized that what seemed like a fair division was actually full of hidden traps.
It took the family quite some effort to get out of trouble and move into the city.
To improve their lives, the family decided to write stories for money, starting with a mystery. Sure enough, the stories sold out as soon as they hit the market, and were a huge success, earning them plenty of silver.
They planned to capitalize on the popularity and turn it into a series, but someone ended up using one of their stories to solve a real case.
The family of three: &*#...?
To avoid trouble, they put storytelling on hold for the time being and decided to come up with a few small inventions and start a little business.
Who would have guessed that Song Yingshu's dad would get acquainted with the county magistrate, somehow become his secretary, and start using modern marketing tactics? He opened a candy factory and held candy contests, making their remote little county famous throughout the land.
Just as Song Yingshu was thinking that being the daughter of a minor official wasn't so bad, her dad started taking the imperial examinations again.
Song Yingshu interviewed her dad: You were a country boy in the morning and a court official by evening. What made you, a modern man, want to take the imperial examinations?
Song Changze replied helplessly: I didn't want to, either. But my useless younger brother has taken the exams for over twenty years and still can't even pass the lowest degree. The main thing is that my dad actually expects me to keep paying for his exams. Rather than throw money away, I figured I might as well take them myself.
So Song Changze kept coming in last and stood with the other successful candidates in the Golden Hall.
Song Changze was quite pleased with himself: To keep coming in last without failing is a skill in itself. It's not so different from winning the top spot in all six examinations.
Song Yingshu: ...I can't argue with that.
After arriving in the bustling capital, Song Yingshu thought that must be the end of it. Instead, her dad kept rising through the ranks, all the way to Chief Grand Secretary.
Song Yingshu: Since my laid-back dad is so capable, I guess I'll just lie back and enjoy the ride.
