The original premise has been changed. If you don't like it, feel free to remove it from your reading list. Sorry, sorry.
A sweet, innocent, naturally goofy, adored-by-everyone heroine x a black-lotus male lead with enough schemes to frighten anyone with trypophobia.
Blurb
Xu Baoxiang is reborn, returning to the age of fifteen, before her parents died tragically and while the Xu family was still intact. From then on, she is careful in everything she does, determined to protect the hard-won happiness she has found.
Yet two years later, she still encounters the culprit who destroyed her family in her previous life: her former husband, Pei Bichen.
He has the handsome, refined appearance of a bodhisattva, but a vicious, venomous heart.
Knowing she can't match him in cunning, Baoxiang tries every way she can to avoid him and wants nothing more to do with Pei Bichen.
But when he is with her, his attitude is completely different from the previous life. Not only does he actively ask to marry her, he treats her with tenderness at every turn.
He no longer teases and mocks her for being foolish, as he always did in their previous life, or treats her like an idiot.
After her parents use every kind of persuasion and pressure, Baoxiang has no choice but to marry him again.
After the wedding, he cares for her attentively and obeys her in every way. Each night, once it is late, he nestles against her neck and secretly calls her his wife.
Even though she never wants to consummate the marriage, he bears the hurt and indulges her. Even when his eyes redden with misery, he comforts her. "It's all right. Bichen is the one at fault."
As time passes, Baoxiang starts to wonder if she has hated the wrong person. Just as she begins to let go of her resentment and is ready to accept this Pei Bichen, so different from the man in her previous life, she unexpectedly catches sight of another side of him one day.
The handsome young man across from her has none of the tender, obsequious manner he always shows her. In one hand, he grips a barbed leather whip covered in blood; with the other, he tightly clutches the other person's jaw.
His voice is clear and captivating, yet the words he speaks are vicious.
His hideous, terrifying expression is exactly the same as Pei Bichen's in his previous life.
"If I catch you peeking at my wife again, I'll gouge your eyes out!"
After being reborn, Pei Bichen uses his memories of his previous life to save his family from ruin. He also gets his wish and marries Xu Baoxiang again, the foolish wife he had wronged so deeply in his previous life.
He had thought that at last they could love each other until old age and raise a daughter and a son together. But he never expected that the moment she saw him, she would flee as if she had spotted a demon.
No matter how hard Pei Bichen tries to win her over, she refuses to come within a step of him.
At long last, he gets an opportunity to consummate the marriage with Xu Baoxiang while she is drunk.
But the first thing she does when she wakes up is shove him hard off the bed.
Looking at the divorce letter in Xu Baoxiang's hand, Pei Bichen can no longer maintain his dignified and refined demeanor. He hysterically demands to know why she avoids him as if he were a snake or scorpion, and why she refuses to treat him as her husband!
The woman stares at him in terror. After a long moment, she speaks haltingly, her voice full of grievance.
"I... I don't want to drink poisoned wine again..."
Pei Bichen is horrified. A convulsive pain rises uncontrollably in his heart.
In the end, with nowhere left to turn and utterly despairing, Pei Bichen kneels humbly at the woman's feet and clutches the hem of her skirt with both hands.
Weeping, he begs her pitifully.
"Wife, please don't leave me."
