Wen Si had admired Fu Zhao, heir to the Duke of Jingguo, since she was fourteen.
Back then, Fu Zhao was aloof and proud, but the look in his eyes as he helped her put on her hood was tender as water.
Wen Si, a legitimate daughter, shaped her life around his preferences and finally received an imperial decree betrothing them.
Unfortunately, the Duke of Shunguo's family fell from power overnight, and everyone pitied the lovely, delicate Wen Si, sure that her engagement would be broken off.
But Fu Zhao still married her, making her the most envied wife of a young lord.
After they married, Wen Si served him with care. She had thought Fu Zhao married her because he loved her, but then she heard from the servants that the elegant and peerlessly handsome Fu Zhao had only married her because his parents had insisted.
Her heart clenched, but she hid her love behind her calm expression, never letting anyone see it, and never uttered a word of complaint, even when Fu Zhao humiliated her time and again.
The following year, during the Lantern Festival, Wen Si went with Fu Zhao to the banks of the Jiuning River.
But the carefree and flirtatious Fu Zhao had already made plans with other young men from prominent families, leaving her all alone.
Feeling cold, she went to look for Fu Zhao so they could return home, only to see her dear husband in a secluded alley.
Facing him was his cousin, who had only just arrived in the capital.
Wen Si was about to approach when she heard Fu Zhao's usually detached voice turn tender. "I'll explain everything to my mother. I will marry you."
Too bad those sweet words weren't meant for her.
Wen Si coughed, startling the two people at the end of the alley.
Fu Zhao was usually so carefree, but the moment he saw her, a flicker of panic crossed his eyes. He tried to support her, but Wen Si shoved him away.
The naturally delicate Wen Si used every ounce of strength she had to push the man she loved away.
Her eyes reddened with anger. Though she usually spoke softly, her voice was cold and trembling as she said, "Fu Zhao, from this day on, we have nothing to do with each other."
At the time, Fu Zhao assumed she was just throwing a tantrum, and that he could soothe her as he always did.
But he never expected Wen Si to leave a divorce agreement behind and disappear for good.

= Drunken Blossoms =
As the illegitimate daughter of an earl's family, Xie Wanling knows her marriage to He Langjin is nothing more than a family deal.
He Langjin is the most refined and upright heir to the Duke of Zhongning's house in the capital.
He is polite to everyone, except Xie Wanling.
Xie Wanling knows her station is low and never expects anything more.
She serves her parents-in-law, acts gentle and considerate, and tries to please everyone in the household, but none of it can earn a smile from He Langjin.
On a snowy night, the wind outside is bitterly cold.
Xie Wanling slips and falls, going into labor prematurely while pregnant.
As she struggles through a difficult birth, her eyes grow moist and her cries of pain escape despite her efforts to suppress them.
But all she hears is a maid saying, "The young lord has business tonight. He's still at the military camp."
So he truly never cared about her.
A single tear rolls down her cheek. Xie Wanling hears the people in the room shouting as her consciousness gradually fades.
When she opens her eyes again, she has returned to the year of her coming-of-age ceremony.
When she sees He Langjin at the residence again, she lowers her gaze and says, "Your daughter is neither talented nor virtuous, and cannot become the wife of a duke's heir. Please choose someone else, Father."
Her younger sisters perk up when they hear Xie Wanling's words.
But then they see the heir's gaze grow increasingly sharp as it settles on their elder sister.
Even the teacup in his hand slips from his long fingers and crashes to the floor.
= The Blind Concubine Zheyin =
The day Yinyin sells herself to bury her father, a wealthy master gives her ten taels of silver and takes her to his residence.
Knowing she is blind, she only wants to repay her master's kindness.
But that night, she loses consciousness. When she wakes the next morning, a man is beside her.
Though she cannot see him, she can tell his presence is icy cold.
Yinyin has no idea why this happened and tries to explain, but the man leaves without a word.
When someone returns to the room, the man asks her in a voice cold as ice, "Will you come with me to the capital? I'll keep you safe and give you a proper title."
Only then does Yinyin learn that the man before her is Prince Jing, Pei Lanzhen.
The previous night, her master had plotted against them, and they had been forced to consummate their marriage.
Yinyin hesitates for a long moment, then turns her unfocused eyes toward Pei Lanzhen and nods.
In the capital, Yinyin is merely a concubine in Prince Jing's residence.
She lives in the most remote courtyard, but still hopes that someday she will be able to see Pei Lanzhen's face with her own eyes.
During a military campaign, Pei Lanzhen is set up by someone. But when he sees that the person before him is a blind woman, he suddenly cannot bring himself to kill her.
They have already shared a bed. Pei Lanzhen only wants her to stay in the residence's courtyard.
He will find someone to heal her eyes and give her a good life, but above all, he does not want to see her again or let that strange feeling show.
But one day, there is a letter on his desk.
A farewell letter.
