Ji Xuemian was once a young man no one wanted to marry. He was beautiful, cold-tempered, and chronically ill. No family wanted to take him as a spouse and have him bear children.
Fortunately, Ji Xuemian was admitted to the Imperial Academy. He rose through the ranks to become Grand Secretary, the most powerful official in court and the emperor's tutor.
When word came that the Prince Regent had rebelled in the southern borderlands, Ji Xuemian hurried there, intending to escort Duan Qichi back to the capital in chains. He never expected things to go badly from the start: the moment he arrived, the Prince Regent seized him and dragged him back to camp.
The two had been at each other's throats since childhood. After years apart, they were at it again, fighting so fiercely neither could pull away.
"Xuemian, I've missed you." Duan Qichi kissed his fingers, his handsome brows drawing together. "You smell so sweet... could you be a young man?"
Ji Xuemian snatched his hand away, his face as cold as frost on a blade. "You must have smelled wrong."
Watching his slightly unsteady retreating figure, Duan Qichi finally began to understand.
One day, someone poisoned Ji Xuemian with a love bug. Blushing, he begged Duan Qichi to help him, and Duan Qichi lost his reason.
Not long afterward, Ji Xuemian discovered he was pregnant.
Ji Xuemian: I have to keep this secret. If the Prince Regent takes me away, who will protect the young emperor?
·
After returning to the capital, Ji Xuemian spoke sharply in court, then went straight home as soon as it adjourned. He often arrived late, left early, and skipped court on the pretext of illness.
By the pond at the Ji residence, Duan Qichi saw Ji Xuemian out for a stroll, one hand supporting his round belly. The beauty, as cold as mountain snow, covered his stomach, trying to hide it.
The Prince Regent, rumored to be a violent, wicked mad dog, looked at him once and froze. He looked again: he seemed like a plump little white sparrow. So cute...
Ji Xuemian: I'm doomed!

A cold, irritable, sickly beauty and the emperor's tutor vs. an ambitious, vindictive Prince Regent
A sweet little romance. This clueless author can't write complicated court intrigue.
A preview of an upcoming historical romance: "Bury the Treacherous"
Fu Chanyuan had been pampered since birth, never having to lift a finger. Her Ninth Uncle served in court and helped her marry into the Eastern Palace, where she became Empress Zhaoming and lived a life of wealth and splendor.
Then a great fire reduced her dream of prosperity to ashes. Only then did she learn that the emperor was gravely ill, powerful ministers controlled the court, and even the secret guards raised by her own family had become the young general's instruments for slaughtering an entire city.
The history books record only this: In the thirteenth year of Zhaoming, Empress Chongren, a bewitching woman who brought disaster to the country, joined forces with powerful ministers, indulged in debauchery, burned the emperor alive in Zhaoming Hall, then took her own life out of shame.
But no one knew that, amid the flames that day, her sickly and beautiful emperor husband fell from his wooden palanquin and begged her to spare his life. His plea was answered with a sword through the heart.
She threw herself into the fire, and at last, they were husband and wife for a lifetime.
Heaven knows, if they could not grow old together, then sharing a grave would have to be enough.
Unexpectedly, Fu Chanyuan was reborn on the night she went to pay her respects to her Ninth Uncle. She had not yet married the Crown Prince. Now she learned that her mother was the emperor's sworn sister and led a secret guard organization. After her mother fell ill, everyone at West Window was silenced by the emperor.
Fu Chanyuan returned the marriage contract. She thought, It was all wrong. Everything was wrong.
Who said she could only become someone else's wife? She was determined to live again on her own terms.
She donned a disguise, led West Window, and pledged herself to the powerless Crown Prince, Shen Xuansu, her husband in her previous life.
-
West Window is the royal family's secret guard, tasked with purging traitors from the emperor's court. Everyone in the capital fears them.
Yet one night, at the Crown Prince's residence in the remote suburbs, the Crown Prince of Zhaoming summoned her.
Through a beaded curtain, he lowered his phoenix eyes and toyed with the wick of an eternal lamp with his pale fingertips.
"The young lady of the Fu family has come to pledge her loyalty?"
The Crown Prince's voice was as soft as spring snow falling on branches. When the beaded curtain rose, she finally saw the Zhaoming Emperor as the world beyond the inner chambers knew him, and a chill ran down her spine.
The cool, aloof man before her was clearly the same husband whose body had been ravaged by illness in her previous life. Yet his words were sinister and cold. He was nothing like a gentle, refined gentleman.
Even in her previous life, she had never heard such hatred in his voice.
The Crown Prince of Zhaoming gazed at her with pity and beckoned her closer to prove her loyalty.
"I presume too much."
Chanyuan gathered her black robes and knelt on one knee. "I know only this: if Your Highness wants the realm, then I will be your most loyal hound."
But the Crown Prince lifted her chin. "What if I want you to be more than my secret guard? What if I want you as my concubine? What would you do?"
Chanyuan calmly met Shen Xuansu's gaze. "Then I will make my body a sword and help you bury the treacherous."

Both leads are reborn, and both pretend to be harmless while hiding their true abilities. The heroine is overwhelmingly irresistible, free-spirited by nature, and the hero is a real piece of work.
Shen Xuansu thinks Chanyuan betrayed him and slept with countless men. He doesn't know she was forced, and he hates her, yet he loves her too.
There is a lot of romance, wordy prose, and plenty of detail. The author likes extensive setup, so it may be a slow burn and not that satisfying. If that bothers you, don't read.
At its heart, it's still just a pair of hopeless romantics, and there are many male supporting characters. The heroine was not chaste in her previous life. Don't accuse the author of misogyny; it's only there to heighten the character conflict.
One-on-one romance, both leads are chaste in this life. Feel free to leave criticism or praise, and come or go as you please.
Theme: On life's long and open road, be brave and kind, positive and optimistic.
