Story Blurb

At twenty-five, good boy Meng Xing accepted a suggestion that sounded very "rebellious": a whirlwind marriage.

His new husband, Chu You'an, was handsome, wealthy, and capable, a top executive by any measure.

Since he was good in every way, there was no time like the present. They went straight to get their marriage certificate.

Married life was more or less what Meng Xing had imagined: someone to keep him company at meals and pick him up when he got home.

Except...

Chu You'an: "I came to pick you up. Do I get a present?"

Meng Xing, who had hardly ever prepared a gift before, hurriedly bought a rose. "Good boy, come closer and I'll give you something in return."

A kiss on the cheek.

After they got home, Meng Xing opened a tutorial video.

Not long afterward, Chu You'an came back from a business trip and surprised Meng Xing.

The polished executive took off his shirt and suit, changed into a racing suit, and showed up in front of Meng Xing on a motorcycle. Meng Xing thought he looked irresistibly handsome.

Meng Xing poked him in the chest with his index finger. "Beauty is more than skin deep. You're so handsome, big brother. I complimented you, so do I get a present?"

Chu You'an pinched his finger. "Naughty boy."

Some of those tutorial videos finally came in handy.

Meng Xing asked, "So, does big brother like good boys or bad boys?"

Chu You'an: "Both. I've loved you for a very, very long time."

Meng Xing wasn't very good at dealing with negative emotions. Chu You'an told him not to bottle things up when he was unhappy, but to tell him instead.

So...

"Come on, let's go to Yudu for hot pot."

"Come on, let's go to Europe for a concert."

"Come on, let's go to Australia to see kangaroos."

"Come on, let's go to Argentina to watch a match."

Before meeting Chu You'an, Meng Xing had barely traveled and had never even been on a plane. Now he had become a frequent flyer.

At last, Meng Xing's life settled down, and Chu You'an asked, "Haven't you had any troubles lately?"

Meng Xing looked at the thirty-year-old man showing signs of a second childhood. "Tell me, where do you want to go this time?"

Legend says that after death, people arrive in the underworld and have two choices. Go up, and they will encounter Lady Meng by the Bridge of Helplessness, where a bowl of her Forgetting Soup will wipe away their past. Go down, and they will find a judge holding a vermilion brush, hastily writing up their lives in a judgment, then sending them to drift through the afterlife with their past still weighing on them.

Some people have knots in their hearts, some have obsessions, and some are afraid. Countless people abandon reincarnation and step into the City of Nothingness. Getting in is easy, but getting out is hard.

Ye Shisan had lost track of how many years he had spent in the City of Nothingness. All he knew was that not long after arriving, he'd gone to the King of Hell and taken a job: resolve the obsessions of the city's residents, then send them out to start down the road to rebirth again.

But Ye Shisan, who had been a young prince in life, disdained speaking with commoners and only wanted to slack off. Still, to remain in the City of Nothingness, he had to complete the basic quota of sending one ghost away each month.

One day, a boor arrived in the City of Nothingness. He was clumsy and offended half the city's ghosts. Worse, he trampled all over Ye Shisan's spotless white robe.

Ye Shisan frowned. "Send him away."

He Jia, held down by the upper body, struggled to lift his head and asked with an excited grin, "Are you a famous courtesan?"

Ye Shisan stared at him for a while, then used a phrase he'd learned in the City of Nothingness: "I'm your daddy."

He Jia: "..."

Much later, Ye Shisan looked at the man beside him in annoyance. "Why are you following me?"

He Jia smiled faintly. "A daddy has to take care of his son's food and drink."

Ye Shisan: "...No bringing family along to work."

He Jia: "Oh~ Family can help out. Don't kick me out, big brother."

Ye Shisan: "...Fine. I'll send you off first, then. Tell me how you died and what you're obsessed with."

He Jia: "I died suddenly. My obsession is that I never got to see the endings of Detective Conan and One Piece. I can't accept it. How about you act them out for me?"

Much later, Ye Shisan said, "What were those Detective Conan and One Piece stories you mentioned like? I'll try acting them out for you."

He Jia: "I'm not leaving. Please don't make me go, okay?"

How outsiders see them: serene as snow (bottom) x unreasonable and persistent (top)

How they see each other: silly beauty (bottom) x a gentleman like fine jade (top)

Reading Guide:

1. The setting is made up. The bottom comes from ancient times, and the top comes from modern times. A mixed-era one-on-one romance.

2. Both died at twenty-one. The ancient one is more mature, though, and if you count the years spent in the City of Nothingness, the younger one is technically the top~
