A timid, ghost-fearing beauty of a Taoist priest bottom VS the cool, aloof top who owns the Yellow Springs Inn in the ghost realm
Ye Chang'an is an orphan. He barely went to school as a child, and he followed around a half-mad old Taoist who was great at talking nonsense. When Ye Chang'an turned eighteen, his unreliable master abandoned him under the pretext of needing to travel the world without any attachments.
So Ye Chang'an, a half-trained little Taoist priest, has to scrape by with the mouth he inherited from his master, who was a swindler and con artist.
Then one day, Granny Wang, a medium he knows well, finds him a job. He can earn a large sum by helping arrange a ghost marriage for someone. The moment he hears this, his legs go weak. Even though he makes his living catching ghosts, he never let his master open his third eye, because he's terrified of ghosts. He even has to sleep with the lights on.
So after Granny Wang finishes explaining, he refuses without a second thought. But after three days without food, he ends up being the one holding the "bride's" portrait.
Bright red wedding candles, a black-and-white portrait, and gusts of eerie wind: the scene could not be more sinister. Ye Chang'an keeps his eyes nearly shut and recites Amitabha under his breath to hold himself together. Granny Wang says this is a "blind date," and the two "newlyweds" have to see whether they like the look of each other.
Once it's finally over, Ye Chang'an nearly wets his pants. But Granny Wang's next words scare him right out of his senses.
The "groom" on the other side has taken a liking to him!
Damn it! This ghost brother was a gay man when he was alive!
At midnight on the wedding day, skeletal ghost guards dressed in tattered red robes march for ten miles down the main street, accompanied by a procession playing bone-chilling funeral music, all the way to Ye Chang'an's shabby rented room. But Ye Chang'an doesn't see any of it, because he faints at the very first note.
When he wakes, the first thing he sees is an antique-looking room. The air is thick with the smell of burning yellow paper. Ye Chang'an sits up trembling. "What is this place?"
"The Yellow Springs." A voice cold enough to freeze his bones.
Ye Chang'an rolls his eyes back and nearly dies on the spot.
"If you dare faint, I'll throw you out to feed the evil ghosts in the River of Forgetfulness." The icy voice speaks again.
At that, Ye Chang'an's eyes roll back into place. He opens them just a crack and looks toward the voice. A man in black sits straight-backed in a chair, his picturesque features as cold as if they were covered in frost.
This underworld husband of mine is pretty hot.
No, no, no! No matter how hot he is, I can't take him. He's not even alive!
Ye Chang'an tumbles off the bed and lands on his knees in front of his "husband." "You're so handsome, you can have anyone you want! Don't be fooled by my good looks. I'm contagious! Hepatitis B, AIDS, tuberculosis, anything you can think of, I've got it!"
"What if I'm not afraid?"
Ye Chang'an is dumbfounded. Holy crap! This is true love!
While he's still marveling over it, the door is kicked open. A fierce-looking man in a bright red wedding robe strides in, looking like an evil ghost.
"Hand him over!"
Ye Chang'an immediately wraps both arms and legs around his "husband's" thigh.
"He's mine." The man calmly takes a sip of tea.
"Bullshit! I married him!" The evil ghost swears.
Ye Chang'an is confused. Did he get the wrong "husband"?
He looks from one ghost to the other, then decides he didn't get the wrong one after all!
"Believe it or not, I'll tear this lousy inn apart!" the evil ghost snarls, and a Green Dragon Crescent Blade like the one wielded by Guan Yu appears in his hand.
The man puts down his teacup. The next second, the fierce spirits in the River of Forgetfulness tear the evil ghost apart and devour him.
Ye Chang'an clings to the man's leg even tighter.
One day later, Xuan Qi looks at Ye Chang'an hesitantly and says, "Back then, when the ghost guards came with the wedding procession and all that red finery, I was the one who came to fetch you."
Ye Chang'an asks, "What wedding procession?"
Xuan Qi: "The day you first arrived in the Yellow Springs."
Ye Chang'an: "I... fainted from fear. I didn't see a thing."
Xuan Qi: "..."
Ye Chang'an: "Qi Qi, how about you escort me again?"
Xuan Qi: "Get lost."
