The Cherished Guest

Wei Zhongzhi, an old-fashioned pedant and an official at the Imperial College, is past thirty and still unmarried. His elders are so worried their hair has turned white. Someone comes up with a harebrained idea: bring a beautiful, charming, considerate cousin from the countryside to the capital, so she can warm his bed and his heart.

Wei Zhongzhi politely replies: Get lost.

Unexpectedly, the cousin arrives from afar, more beautiful than peach and plum blossoms. She is lovely, to be sure, but she won't eat unless it's the finest delicacies, won't wear anything but luxurious silks, and won't sleep without a jade pillow and cool silk sheets. She's so spoiled and extravagant that she's not considerate in the least.

Wei Zhongzhi: Look how badly she's been spoiled.

His family members egg each other on, threatening to cut off her fine clothes and delicious food and take away her soft bedding and fragrant pillows.

She turns to leave, and Wei Zhongzhi quickly pulls her back. "Maybe we should keep spoiling her after all."
