Eye of the Storm

Ning Zhi first met Li Jichuan on a stormy, rain-lashed night.

She had followed her college roommate home to stay the night. Soaked and bedraggled, she glanced into the living room and saw a man standing behind the sofa, talking on the phone.

The man was powerfully built, and even his dark loungewear couldn't conceal his cold, wild aura.

Worried she might dirty the expensive, spotless wool carpet, Ning Zhi stood awkwardly outside the entryway.

Li Jichuan ended his call and turned his head. After a moment, he smiled slightly, his manner refined and gentlemanly. "It's all right. Come on in."

Ning Zhi, clutching her damp skirt, froze. His warm, courteous smile made her ears turn red and her heart race. Dazed, she nodded.

But she failed to notice the deep, covert look in his eyes, like a wolf's.

The first time Ning Zhi fell for someone, she summoned the courage to pursue him.

She chased Li Jichuan so openly that everyone knew about it, and they all waited to see how it would end.

Everyone thought she was punching above her weight.

Li Jichuan came from an illustrious family but had been single for years. He was famous in their circle for being untamed and hard to control, and countless beauties had tried and failed to win him over. There was no way some young girl would succeed.

But later, a grand, once-in-a-century proposal by the Xun River went viral online, and the whole city learned that Li Jichuan was spoken for.

Word had it that the woman was surnamed Ning, was twenty-three, and had only just graduated from college.

Later still, someone asked Ning Zhi how she'd managed to win Li Jichuan over.

Looking embarrassed, Ning Zhi said, "Maybe, maybe it's because I'm sincere..."

At that, the man sitting beside her smiled, his expression inscrutable.

Ning Zhi thought her persistence had won Li Jichuan's heart. She didn't know that he had been the one to fall first, from the very beginning.
