Raising a Wolf

When Wu Ning was in college, she volunteered to teach in a remote mountain village. There, she met a girl of seven or eight, always grimy and sitting quietly on a haystack.

The villagers said she was an unwanted child, picked up by an old man.

The old man was deaf and blind. He had a son with an intellectual disability, over thirty and still unmarried.

In ten years, the girl would be married off to the old man's son.

Unable to bear it, Wu Ning spent all her savings and took the girl away with her.

Later, the girl was admitted to the best university in the country. She grew into a poised, beautiful young woman, the model child everyone else's parents wished they had.

Yu Yang had learned early to understand the world.

From the start, she knew the old man who had taken her in had ulterior motives.

She wasn't afraid of dying. She was waiting to turn eighteen, so she could take revenge on everyone on her wedding night.

Her resolve was firm, and she thought nothing could ever change her plans.

But then she met an older sister: gentle and immaculate, untouched by the world's filth, yet willing to bring Yu Yang, filthy as she was, into her own spotless world.

Her life changed because of that.

By the time she was eighteen, Yu Yang was no longer in the mountains.

She took the university entrance exams and was admitted to the best university in the country.

On her eighteenth birthday, she sat with her older sister and watched fireworks in the sky.

Her sister held her hand and made a wish upon the fireworks: that everyone would be safe and well.

Yu Yang realized she wished for the same thing.

She realized she had long since left behind her former plan to risk everything. The mud had been washed away, and she had been given a new life.
