The Beta at the Center of the Maelstrom

Yan Yizhou was a Beta who spent five years by the side of General Yan's second son, Yan Ling, a headstrong, ill-tempered Alpha. For five years, he attended to Yan Ling's every need, coming whenever he was called and leaving whenever he was dismissed. Apart from vanishing for a while each year, Yan Yizhou was the perfect loyal sidekick. Everyone said he was utterly in love with Yan Ling. Then, during the new recruits' first defense against an enemy attack, Yan Ling distinguished himself so brilliantly that he was awarded his military rank ahead of schedule. Praise came pouring in. But Yan Yizhou suddenly came to say goodbye. Only then did Yan Ling learn that long ago, Yan Yizhou had nearly become his "big brother's husband." And the reason he disappeared at the same time each year was to hold a private memorial for General Yan's eldest son, his long-deceased elder brother. Now Yan Ling had clearly become capable of standing on his own. Yan Yizhou had finally completed his duty. After they parted, Yan Ling realized just how many people wanted Yan Yizhou. His fiery, spoiled former classmate; a stern, imposing superior officer; an enemy leader with ulterior motives; even his own close friend, who used to tell him, "If you don't love him, don't hurt him." All of them, some boldly and some discreetly, reached out to Yan Yizhou. Yan Ling tried everything he could until he finally earned a backward glance from him. But Yan Yizhou only looked at him with a faint, amused smile: You'll never be able to mark me. You'll spend your whole life enduring the torment of having your pheromones left unsuppressed, and competing with a dead man for your lover.
