The Down-on-His-Luck Young Husband

Sui Yu was a cherished and pampered young man, raised by his family with every kindness. He ate delicacies, wore fine silks, and had a pair of tender, expressive eyes. But his good fortune did not last. During the struggle among the emperor's five sons for the throne, the Sui family backed the wrong side and was punished with confiscation of their property and exile.

On the journey into exile, Sui Yu ate grass roots and tree bark and wore coarse hemp clothes. The light had long since vanished from his eyes.

When he was taken up the mountain, Sui Yu looked at the burly man seated imperiously in the main hall. His hair was a mess, his beard unkempt, and even the sash on his clothes was tied crookedly. Sui Yu gazed at the sky, nearly in tears, but in the end he still put on the wedding robes and became the bandit's bride.

He had married him, but every moment was spent thinking about how to escape.

"Go tell Lin Muqing the potato strips were cut too sharp today. They scratched my throat and made my voice hoarse." Sui Yu's voice was hoarse because he'd been bullied all night.

"Go tell Lin Muqing these coarse clothes have rubbed me raw and covered me in a rash." The rash on Sui Yu's body was actually from Lin Muqing pinching him too hard the night before.

"Go tell Lin Muqing the wind on the mountain was too strong. It blew my eyes red." Sui Yu's eyes were red because he'd cried so hard the night before.

Later, Sui Yu noticed that the coarse grain and tree roots had been replaced with polished rice and fine food, and even the ends of the potato strips were now cut smooth and rounded. The coarse hemp clothes had all been replaced with fine cotton.

What he had thought was a den of wolves had become a shelter from the wind and rain. His messy, unkempt husband, once cleaned up, was quite handsome.

Now that everything in life was going smoothly, Sui Yu had long since given up on escaping and planned to settle down as the bandit's bride.

The little troublemaker had stopped making a fuss, which frightened Lin Muqing. He held Sui Yu and checked him from head to toe, afraid something was wrong.

Sui Yu was so moved that his eyes turned red. Lin Muqing instinctively admitted fault: "Stop crying. Fine, I was wrong, all right?"

Sui Yu: I hate that you're as dense as a block of wood!
