Rubbing the Little Mountain Bird's Tail

Shan Ling was a little round bird. Hoping to become the next phoenix at the All Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix banquet, she decided to go out and gain experience and good karma, becoming the first phoenix in the Shan Que family.

But life in the human world was so hard. Shan Ling was so poor that she couldn't even afford corn, despite helping old ladies cross the street every day. Just when she was about to sleep on the streets, she met a woman.

Shan Ling discovered that whenever she helped the woman with something, lots of good karma appeared in her merit box. She immediately felt that becoming a phoenix was within reach!

Just as Shan Ling excitedly figured out how to accumulate good karma, an accident caused her to revert to her original form. Shen Qingyi saw the little round bird that had followed her home and shut it in a cage.

Shan Ling was a very polite little bird. Whenever Shen Qingyi fed her something delicious, Shan Ling would pluck a feather from herself and place it in her palm. She'd look up at her with her little head raised, showing that she had to pay for her meal.

Shen Qingyi stared at the fluffy little feather in her hand, momentarily distracted. She'd heard that when birds plucked their own feathers and gave them to someone, it meant they were courting them.

She thought to herself: This chubby little chicken seems to really like me.
