Tangxi Yu grew up mischievous and unruly, tormenting cats and dogs. No noble families in the capital dared to arrange a match for him. He had a pretty face, at least, but after his mother failed to find him a suitable match time and again, she saw that he was reaching marriageable age and waved her hand. Fine, send him to the palace for the selection.
Who could have guessed the selection was just a pretext? They were using it to pick a husband for the princess from Beimo who had come for a political marriage.
As luck would have it, they picked someone from the Tangxi family.
Rumor had it that the people of Beimo ate raw meat and drank blood, with green faces, fangs, and hideous looks. On the eve of the wedding, Tangxi Yu was so frightened that he wouldn’t leave the house, and even considered running away.
On the wedding night, as Ruyi lifted the bride’s red veil, he saw a beauty in the wavering candlelight, with a face like fine jade and skin like cream. He froze, blushing and at a loss for words. He swallowed. “M-My wife...”
How was this ugly? The rumors were all lies!
Lang Su was the ninth son of the King of Beimo. His eldest brother would stop at nothing, even harming his own siblings, to secure the throne. Lang Su had no faction of his own and didn’t want to sit around waiting to die, so he ambushed the political marriage procession. His one chance to escape was to marry into another country. He kept a dagger tucked inside his wrist. When the wedding night came, that fool who didn’t know what was good for him would die.
But when the honest, elegant young man before him lifted the veil, Lang Su saw him just once and gave up on killing him.
What could this guy possibly do to him?
His little husband was perfect in every way, except that he was a bit clingy. Lang Su had no time for love. He planned to take advantage of his husband’s family’s power and figure out how to return to Beimo.
But when everything was finally accomplished and he returned to Beimo, the light had long since vanished from the eyes of the person at his side. Those eyes, once filled with love, now held only hatred.
He said, “I wish I’d never met you.”
He died in the sea of flames. Lang Su, now King of Beimo, rushed into the fire without hesitation and frantically shoved aside the charred beams. He held the body in his arms. The new king vomited blood, and his anguished cries as he clutched the burned bones echoed across Beimo.
Not long after, a young man wearing a bamboo hat set off alone to find his family.
