The Heat of Summer

Jiang Jin had a younger sister with autism. On her fourteenth birthday, she was accidentally hit by a car.

The smell of disinfectant in the midsummer hospital stung Jiang Jin's nose. Damp with sweat, she pushed open the ward door and immediately saw the doctor beside her sister...

"Jiang Jin." The man's gaze was stern.

Jiang Jin nearly turned and ran.

Before she turned eighteen, Jiang Jin was brash and childish. She cornered the top student from the class next door in an alley and beat him up.

When her friends tried to join in, she kicked one of them away and declared, "I'm the only one who gets to beat him up!"

After turning eighteen, Jiang Jin cut her long hair, put on clothes that didn't fit, and left with her sister. She didn't know that on the night she left, the top student from the class next door waited outside her building all night.

When they met again five years later, Jiang Jin was awkward, embarrassed, and guilty. She wished she could disappear in front of him.

But this time, before she could turn away, he held out the medical records in his hand. "You beat someone up and ran away, and you stayed gone for five years..."

Jiang Jin lowered her head. "I'm sorry."

"And besides that?"

"You can beat me up. Just don't hit my face."

He fell silent. When she looked up in confusion, the man leaned down, his voice cool beside her ear. "Beating you up isn't enough. How about letting me pursue you for once..."

Jiang Jin: "..." Are you crazy?
