Luckily, when Zhou Miao arrived, she hadn't entered the palace yet. She was still staying at the home of an old acquaintance in the capital.

The same household was also home to Li Youbai, the crown prince the emperor had just deposed.

There was still time to change things.

To avert her tragic fate, Zhou Miao, armed with knowledge of the plot, had no choice but to become a hard-working tool, diligently helping the deposed crown prince Li Youbai so she could avoid entering the palace, then stay safe once he eventually took the throne, and perhaps even get rich along the way.

But Li Youbai was deep-minded and impossible to read.

After countless hardships, Zhou Miao finally waited until he ascended the throne, only for Li Youbai to go back on his word.

After trying again and again to reason with him to no avail, Zhou Miao gave up, packed her bags, and fled in the middle of the night.

But before she had even gone five li, Li Youbai stopped her. "At this point, do you really think you can still get away?"

The fox spirit Liu Zhao joined the Xuantian Spirit Mountain sect to save someone.

Her goal was to take the bones and blood of the eldest senior brother, Shen Helang.

Her ribbon fluttered in the wind. For a few moments, everything around them seemed to stand still. He couldn't hear anyone. He couldn't hear Liu Zhao either.

She simply gazed at him in silence, though it seemed she wasn't really looking at him.

Only when the commotion around them flooded back did the silence break.

The spectators on Spirit Mountain looked on, their faces a jumble of bewilderment, alarm, and anger.

Shen Helang stared blankly as bright red blood spread across his white robes.

"Why?" He looked up at her and finally found his voice.

Liu Zhao's expression didn't change. She showed neither fear nor remorse.

Liu Zhao's eyes slowly turned purple.

A purple glow gradually surrounded her, while demon aura curled around her like clouds.

The ribbon in her hair snapped, and her long hair drifted in the demonic aura.

Liu Zhao was a monster.

So Liu Zhao really was a monster, Shen Helang thought.

Blood dripped down the Xuan Guang Sword, one drop at a time.

He stubbornly asked again, "Why?"

"Junior sister, have I not treated you well?"

He heard Liu Zhao reply, "You have treated me well, Senior Brother. But the way you treat me is no different from the way you treat everyone else. You care for all the people of the world, treating everyone equally well. Your Dao heart is clear and pure. No wonder they chose you."
