Lu Shuang understood early on that falling for a cold, aloof man like Shen Luchuan could only end badly.

Everyone laughed at her, saying she was nothing more than a way for Shen Luchuan to pass the time.

Mud, dreaming of washing itself clean to become snow on the eaves.

Lu Shuang coveted the little warmth that slipped through Shen Luchuan's fingers, as if it were a warm, dazzling pool.

Without hesitation, she stepped into it.

Only later did she learn that she was merely a pawn in another one of Shen Luchuan's hunts.

The truer her love, the more exciting the hunt.

Shen Luchuan had remained high above it all from beginning to end, watching everything with cold indifference.

Lu Shuang: "Mr. Shen, my part is over. Please settle the bill."

A sneer played on Shen Luchuan's lips. "Are you sure?"

Lu Shuang turned and waved with easy confidence, then left without a backward glance.

That year, the rainy season dragged on, and torrential water poured through the ravines of the world.

No one could have imagined that one day, the cold and indifferent Shen Luchuan would, despite running a high fever, cross half the globe overnight to return home just to bring someone an umbrella.

Lu Shuang was about to head home with the boy next door when Shen Luchuan, soaked through, held an umbrella over her head. "I was passing by, so I brought you an umbrella."

Lu Shuang calmly walked around him.

Not long afterward, news spread that the young lady of the Lu family was engaged.

In the dressing room, Shen Luchuan pins her against the floor-to-ceiling window, gripping her waist in a desperate frenzy.

For the first time, the man who always had everything under control looks lost.

"Shuang'er, could you lie to me one more time?"

The first time they meet.

Xu Leyan carries a brand-new insulated food jar and waits outside the Yuansheng Group building until two in the morning, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newly appointed head of the Sheng family.

Through the car window, Sheng Zewen sees the strange girl who's pursuing him. Her lips are purple from the frost, but she carefully shields the food jar in her arms. She looks like a stalker who doesn't know when to quit.

His expression is indifferent. He signals the driver to leave.

The car whizzes past the girl.

Later.

Xu Leyan stands in the hospital corridor, gazing at him with eyes blazing with tenderness.

"Mr. Sheng, I have a rare blood type too. I'm willing to donate bone marrow to your sister."

The man lowers his lashes and notices how slender the girl before him is, as if she might snap in two at any moment.

It feels as though a frail little cat has gently scratched at his heart.

He smiles faintly.

"Tell me, what do you want in return?"

"Please save my boyfriend."

In a courtyard in the outskirts, rain beats down on banana leaves, and fallen leaves carpet the ground.

The girl's back is flushed red. She struggles to push herself up from the wicker chair, her voice breaking like beads from a snapped string.

"...You said... one thing in exchange for another... you'd let me go..."

The man lifts his eyes, his nose lightly brushing her earlobe. His deep-set eyes fix on her, his voice gentle yet forceful.

"Yanyan, if I won't let you go, where do you think you can run?"
