1.

Before An Xixi started at No. 1 High School, she loved dozing off in the little shop at her grandma's house.

After school, a big brother in a black-and-white uniform would come by to buy snacks and tell her all the gossip and rumors from school.

Zhi Ge was a famous figure at the affiliated high school: unruly, aloof, carefree, and flamboyant.

They said he wore black all year round and had a terrifying face. Even big stray dogs would retreat in fear when he walked by.

She heard about him so often that, without ever seeing him, just hearing his name left a huge shadow on her young heart.

One day, a boy in a bucket hat walked in while An Xixi rested her chin on her hands, pondering life.

As he paid, she couldn't help asking, “By the way, is Zhi Ge really scary? I've been having nightmares about him lately.”

The boy glanced at her nonchalantly and corrected her. “It's pronounced Zhi.”

2.

It was a sweltering day. An Xixi walked beneath the trees on campus, sucking on a popsicle.

Her eyes were half-closed, and she was just about to nod off when a can flew out of nowhere toward her. It was about to hit her in the head.

Clack! Someone suddenly kicked it away.

The boy leaped high into the air, and, as if showing off, sent the soda can flying like a soccer ball straight into a distant trash can. The wind tossed his hair, proof of his wild, carefree nature.

He was so cocky he didn't even ask if she was okay. He just strolled away with his hands in his pockets.

She stared blankly at his back.

Then she heard someone say, “Zhi Ge, quit pretending. You're going to be late.”

Clack! Her popsicle dropped to the ground.

And her heart sank right along with it.

3.

Later, she bought mung bean popsicles and wanted to slip one into his desk like the other girls did.

Before she could get there, the boy rode up on his bike and snatched it away.

He was still as cocky as ever. He blocked her way and, with a fierce glare, told her not to give popsicles to other boys.

An Xixi blinked, stammering a little. “I-I got it for you.”

“And don't be afraid of me, either,” he said gruffly.

“...”

“Fine. Next time, I'll treat you to something even sweeter.” His tone softened a little.

The proud boy lowered his eyes to the little girl's hair and, for a moment, lost his composure.

“Sleepy, adorable sweetheart vs. proud, cocky, cool boy”
