[Bungo Stray Dogs] Dazai and Chuuya: The Seven Deadly Sins, Purgatory Arc

Through me you enter the city of endless pain.

Through me you enter the pit of eternal suffering.

Through me you enter the crowd of those lost beyond all hope.

Justice moved my sublime Creator.

I am the work of divine power, divine wisdom, and divine love.

Before me, no eternal things were made,

And I endure eternally.

Abandon all hope, you who enter here.

Pride: Guard against arrogance, and be punished with a heavy burden.

Envy: Guard against jealousy, and be punished by having your eyes sewn shut.

Wrath: Guard against anger, and be punished with black smoke.

Sloth: Guard against idleness, and be punished with hunger.

Greed: Guard against avarice, and be punished by lying face down.

Gluttony: Guard against excess, and be punished with hunger.

Lust: Guard against desire, and be punished with flames.

Dante, The Divine Comedy: Purgatorio

"Let me think... The opposites of the seven deadly sins are the seven virtues." Dazai Osamu leaned against the wall, gazing out the white window as he pondered.

Fyodor, seated beside Dazai Osamu, picked up the thread:

"Lust corresponds to chastity or fidelity,

Gluttony to temperance,

Greed to generosity,

Sloth to diligence or hope,

Wrath to perseverance,

Envy to tolerance,

And pride to humility."

Fyodor put down the copy of The Divine Comedy in his hands and looked up at Dazai Osamu.

"They want us to be good people? They sure have some nerve." Dazai Osamu clicked his tongue in annoyance.

"But what we need to consider is the punishment we're about to face." Though he said this, Fyodor still looked unconcerned.
