With her regent father indulging her and her eight older brothers doting on her, she grew up as The Outcast, second to none but the emperor and above all others. She became sharp-tongued, domineering, and wanton. On the Mid-Autumn Festival, she was named Dacheng's only princess with a different surname. Yet on the very day of her investiture ceremony, her entire family was massacred. The young emperor, her childhood sweetheart, had plotted against her and seized control of the throne. Her betrothed, who stood at the head of the great clans, shot her into the Qujiang River, then searched for her body for three months, determined not to let even the slightest chance of survival slip by. A political rival whose marriage proposal she had rejected took advantage of her misfortune, trying to force her into marriage and cage her like a canary. Many people in the capital toasted her death. The streets of Chang'an were covered in a foot of firecracker debris as everyone celebrated Cui Jiu's well-deserved demise. The festivities were livelier than New Year's. But no one expected Cui Yang to return, more brazen than ever, wielding immense power and surrounding the capital with an army of three hundred thousand. The young emperor, her childhood sweetheart, Sima Geng: "Yangyang, would you like to be Empress of Dacheng?" Cui Yang: "I could be emperor." Her betrothed, Shen Ke, the chief minister: "I misunderstood you. Forgive me, A-Yang." Cui Yang: "Go die." Her political rival, Xiao Han: "Little Jiu, I have thirteen cities. I'll marry into your family. Let me be Empress of Dacheng." Cui Yang: "Keep your cities. I'll come take them next month." The assassin who pretended to be a harmless little rabbit to win her over, only to be won over himself: "It's lonely at the top, and invincibility is boring. Your Majesty, let me stay by your side." Cui Yang: "To be honest, being emperor is pretty fun." The ministers: "Your Majesty, my son is handsome and exceptionally talented. Would he be to your liking?" Blurb Two: Cui Yang built twelve prisons and locked up half of Dacheng's rulers and ministers. They were shocked and furious, but none dared disobey. One day after court, with spring in full bloom, Cui Yang reclined on a beauty's lap, sipping fine wine and watching the curvy and slender dancers perform. She asked the prison warden pleasantly, "The dungeon is dark and sunless. After three months, how many have gone mad, and how many have hanged themselves?" The warden replied with an awkward smile, "Your Majesty must be joking. You have a keen eye. All twelve of them are extraordinarily talented, and they're doing just fine. Though they say they've realized their mistakes and beg Your Majesty to give them a chance to make amends..." Cui Jiu sat up with interest and straightened her imperial robes. "Come on, let's go see." Also known as: All the Court Officials Want to Rekindle Their Old Flames with Me [Reading Notes] 1. The writing style leans toward serious historical drama. 2.
