Out-of-Control Tenderness

[At the pinnacle of success, bold and carefree, he still resents the world and longs to see me fall.]

Blurb: The Wen and Xu families of the capital arrange a marriage alliance. Their engagement banquet is grand and lively, but the two people at its center look equally cold, as if neither of them wants this marriage.

After the banquet, Wen Ran waits beside the car.

Xu Dongyang sneers, “It’s just a business marriage. Miss Wen doesn’t have to take it so seriously.”

Wen Ran gives a cold smile. “You’re overthinking it, Mr. Xu. I’m just here to remind you what you should and shouldn’t say to the media from now on. Don’t damage my career.”

Xu Dongyang straightens his cuffs and says carelessly, “Don’t worry. I won’t get in the way of you finding some fresh-faced young actor and starting a new romance.”

Wen Ran raises an eyebrow. “Sure. As long as your first love behaves herself, I won’t lay a finger on your moonlight.”

After that, they go their separate ways.

Later, at an awards ceremony, Xu Dongyang sees his bewitchingly beautiful wife arrive, holding hands and sharing affectionate laughter with someone else. He is so distracted that he doesn’t even notice the cigarette burning his fingers.

A friend sitting beside him asks, “Do you like her? Did you suddenly realize you were blind before?”

Xu Dongyang flicks away the cigarette butt and crushes it underfoot, smiling ruefully. “Like her? It’s carved into my lungs and burned into my heart.”
