Psyche is the most beautiful girl in the city-state, but an oracle decrees that she must become the wife of a monster.

That night, a winged man appears behind her and covers her eyes. "Dear Psyche, promise me you'll never look at me, all right?"

For many nights afterward, the monster appears beneath the moon right on time, keeping her company and calling to her tenderly.

But the more she's forbidden to look, the more curious Psyche becomes.

Then one day, she visits the temple of the god of love, Cupid, and discovers that her husband is none other than the god of love himself.

Please add The Girl Sacrificed to the Lord of the Underworld [Greek Mythology] to your collection.

1. Persephone opens her eyes. She wears a wreath of flowers and a white shroud, and holds a sprig of myrtle, like a dead girl.

She is lying in a small boat, drifting slowly along the River Styx toward the entrance to Tartarus, the underworld.

The wedding mass and the funeral dirge ring out at the same time. She is about to marry a living corpse,

to become the bride of Hades, Lord of the Underworld.

2. Persephone accidentally eats food from the underworld, and her young life is cut short.

Her extraordinary beauty catches the eye of Hades, the widowed lord of the underworld, who chooses her as his queen.

The wedding gift Hades gives her is death.

After they marry, they sleep in separate beds.

Hades is cold and lifeless, like a consumptive lurking in the dark.

"Do as I say, or I'll have the monsters of Tartarus tear you apart."

There is no sunlight underground. She has lost the sunshine, flowers, and friends she once knew.

She is kind and affectionate, while Hades is a loner whose terrifying face often makes her cry.

She tries to change things, using every ounce of her strength to make flowers bloom across the land of the dead, which is piled high with skulls.

But Hades doesn't like the flowers and orders them uprooted.

"Don't presume to do as you please in my domain."

Persephone realizes she's living with an unreasonable madman, and she's about to go mad herself.

Fortunately, the little god of love arrives and gives them a pair of lead arrows that make them hate each other, freeing them both.

Back on the surface, Persephone falls in love again with the beautiful young Adonis.

Just when she thinks her life can finally get back on track, Hades comes after her again and unceremoniously grants her rival, Adonis, death. Persephone is furious, and the stern, imposing Lord of the Underworld kneels before her, looking aggrieved.

He carefully plants a handful of flowers for her.

"I don't know how to grow flowers. I don't know if I did it right."

"Could you teach me?"
