Misty Hong Kong Island

In the hazy morning mist, at a private mansion at 78 Shallow Water Bay Road.

Qianqian stood before him and finally brought up marriage.

She had come to Hong Kong alone, living in a cramped subdivided flat in a tenement building and counting every penny, even over a packet of instant noodles. It was only by a twist of fate that the two of them got together. In the blink of an eye, seven years had passed. Her parents had repeatedly urged her to get a clear answer about where their relationship was headed.

The man lounged in a rattan armchair, relaxed in his posture. An open copy of the South China Morning Post lay before him, his eyes on the business section.

At her words, he slowly looked up. The salty, humid air of Shallow Water Bay mingled with the morning breeze. It was hard to tell how much sincerity or dismissiveness was in his expression.

He weighed every consideration as clearly as if he were managing a business. His love was real, but the family interests already laid out could not be shaken. He would not change his future for her in the slightest.

“So you're saying you don't plan to marry me anytime soon.”

She lowered her head, her disappointment plain.

Seeing this, Lin Shen reached out and ruffled the top of her head, his voice still soft and gentle.

“But, baby, I really do like you.”

“Be good and stay by my side.”
