Strike It Rich at the Coffin

[An old abandoned project with a new premise. I'll continue it after finishing my next book. Written in third person, a lighthearted supernatural story, entirely fictional and unrelated to real life.]

My name is Huo Wan, and I'm a funeral wailer.

My family has dealt with the dead for generations, because it's the only way we can earn enough to eat.

*

Everyone in the village says the Huo family ancestors were cursed. I believe them without a doubt, because ever since I was little, a poor ghost no one else can see has followed me around. That's the curse.

Poverty is the curse on my family.

Breaking the curse is my greatest wish in life.

*

I'm poor, but I'm tough.

My family says that people in our line of work are bound to run into unclean things. But I've never been afraid of them, and I don't believe in them either. Usually, everyone else is trembling with fear.

I'm overjoyed. Lowering my voice, I ask, "Can you help me kill him? Or kill me, and then I'll kill him after I die."

The unclean thing: "..."

Whenever I'm in danger, the poor ghost steps in front of me and protects me.

Because, as he says, "If you get hurt again, I won't even be able to eat ghost rice."

That's right. On top of being poor, I have to support myself and a poor ghost. T_T

Later, I take on bone-setting as a side job. I open coffin after coffin, dig up grave after grave, and piece together the remains of the dead... until I open a lacquer-red wedding coffin and find a headless female corpse inside.
