Lin Zhuang was a fine young man, raised right for the modern world. While trying to help someone, he got swindled out of everything he had, right down to his underwear.
He'd only dozed off for a moment when his soul transmigrated to another world. As luck would have it, a coworker had mysteriously pulled out a Mary Sue novel and told him there was a "village tyrant" in it with the same name as him, and even the exact same appearance.
He was a cannon fodder character who didn't even get a full line of dialogue.
To survive, Lin Zhuang had to keep up an act. He discovered that whenever he did something out of character, his head throbbed with unbearable pain, as if something were rejecting him.
He would deliberately snatch the shabby toys from children's hands, then force the candy and clay figurines he'd just bought on them, patting his chest righteously as he declared, "This is what I owe you for making you cry."
The elderly neighbor still insisted on working in the fields despite her age. Lin Zhuang snatched the hoe from her hands, looking ferocious as he barked, "Who said you could work? Put that down. I'll do it."
Another time, he took the silver he'd earned from a day of labor and bought some pork head meat. He saw the family of four belonging to the uncle who had often helped him eating a watery meal with not a scrap of meat in sight, so he shoved the meat he'd just bought at them, as if trying to reassure himself. "I don't like it anyway. You can have it."
And that's how he got the name "village tyrant."
What he didn't know was that someone was watching everything he did. It was said that his father had arranged a betrothal for him when he was young, to the daughter of a wealthy family famous throughout the surrounding villages. Unfortunately, the family's "young lady" was a sickly invalid, bedridden with paralysis.
Only, there seemed to be something a little off about this person's gender?
Although he was a man, he was so delicate that he panted after taking a couple of steps, then went limp against Lin Zhuang's back, unconcerned by the strange looks everyone else gave them.
He needed someone to feed and wash him, and there was also that contract. Who was the one trapped by fate, anyway?
Lin Zhuang was lost in a tender dream, never realizing it was all a thoroughgoing deception.
He grew frightened, terrified. When he tried to flee with his bundle in the middle of the night, he was pinned down at the mouth of an alley. The man's pale face twisted with menace as he lifted Lin Zhuang's chin. "Trying to run?"
"That's never going to happen in this lifetime."
