The year Pan Xia turned eighteen, she fell into the water and forgot much of her past. The only thing she remembered was a low, warm voice that accompanied her into sleep on countless sleepless nights:
"Don't be afraid. Hold on to me."
She had only ever heard a similar voice from Wen Yiran, her childhood sweetheart and fiance.
So even though Wen Yiran had countless romantic entanglements and rumors swirling around him, and still carried an unattainable first love in his heart, Pan Xia quietly stayed by his side for three years.
Everyone praised Wen Yiran for his good fortune. He'd been born rich, and had a childhood sweetheart for a fiancee: beautiful, gentle, and even with a good temper that meant she never got angry no matter how he treated her.
Wen Yiran gave a lazy laugh. "She's just a stand-in. She's the one who wants this."
At a banquet announcing their wedding plans, Wen Yiran abandoned Pan Xia and went to a neighboring city to arrange a drone show for his first love's birthday. Then he called her:
"Let's break off the engagement. I don't want to play this game anymore."
Everyone was laughing at Pan Xia. Only the refined, noble man standing at the landing of the stairs reached out to her, his voice gentle:
"Don't be afraid. Would you like to come with me?"
He was Wen Yiran's uncle, who had just returned from abroad: a young, handsome business tycoon, and the true head of the Wen family.
His voice was exactly the same as the one Pan Xia heard in her dreams.

The night he learned that his fiancee had gotten engaged to his uncle, Wen Yiran stood downstairs with red-rimmed eyes, his voice hoarse.
"Don't you like my voice best?"
"Pan Xia, we've known each other for so many years. Are you really leaving me?"
The villa door opened. The sleepy young woman nestled in the man's arms, her voice sweet and innocent.
"But I only like your voice. I don't like you."
The man looked down at him, his voice cool and clear.
"Wen Yiran, I only asked you to look after her for a few years in my place. How did you end up taking it seriously?"
#They're both stand-ins anyway. Only a fool takes it seriously#
Sweet and delicate girl x refined scoundrel
