The Rules of Surviving as a Monster

The legendary flying fish, Wenyao, wakes from a long sleep to find that the Great Wilderness War has ended. Oceans have become fields in the blink of an eye, ancient divine beasts have dwindled in number, and the world has changed beyond recognition.

Not only has spiritual energy dried up, but there are also all sorts of rules governing how demons can survive.

One rule in particular hits Wenyao hard: no one can become a spirit after the founding of the country.

"I became a spirit in ancient times," Wenyao explains earnestly.

"But all of us who became spirits before the country was founded have to attend demon school. We can only stay in the human world after we graduate," a group of demons kindly explains to her.

To survive, Wenyao has no choice but to go along with it and enroll at demon school. On the first day of classes, she discovers that the school's director is her former lover. Overjoyed, she remembers what Lu Kun said when they parted during the Great Wilderness War: "Even if we are reborn and live through countless hardships, I'll still find you in a crowd. The first time I see you, I'll fall in love with you just as I always have."

Wenyao rushes over, eager to pour out her grievances to her former lover, only to be sent flying by a swipe of Lu Kun's wing. "Demon rule number one: No seducing your colleagues. Since it's your first offense, run three laps around the track."

Wenyao: "Damn..."

"Swearing without cause is liable to corrupt the young of the demon realm. Five days in solitary confinement." Lu Kun's face is cold, and he is unmoved. He looks at Wenyao as if she's just another stranger.

Wenyao: "..."

Their old vows of eternal love have gone to the dogs. Wenyao finally understands: the opposite sex are all dogs, whether human men or male demons.

Even an ancient divine beast like the Kunpeng is no exception.

Back when Lu Kun was still a Kun, he gazed at the one he fell in love with at first sight and said with confidence, "You're so beautiful. A big fish like me and a little fish like you are a perfect match."

Wenyao: "She's not a little fish. She's a flying fish."

Now that Lu Kun has become a Kunpeng, he looks at the pretty woman throwing herself into his arms. "Don't think I'll go soft just because you're pretty."

Wenyao: "..."

After more than a hundred thousand years, this big fish is seriously ill...

Modern setting. Wenyao fish x Kunpeng, a flying fish and a big fish. Wenyao is a lucky carp.

Kun means big fish, and Peng means giant bird. They seem to be two different creatures, but since the Kun turns into a Peng, let's just treat him as one creature here.
