The Princess and Her Shadow Guard

In her previous life, Shen Lingchun, the Eldest Princess, had exhausted herself supporting her young brother's ascension to the throne. She and her husband despised one another and schemed against each other, until she finally died from a cup of poisoned wine he gave her.

She died full of resentment, an unwilling fixation clinging to her soul. She saw a tall man kneeling before her coffin, weeping bitterly. In a half-open cloth bag at his feet lay her husband's bloody head.

Shen Lingchun stared for a long while before remembering that he was a covert guard of the princess's residence, named Yan Jiu.

That day, she had argued with her husband and was in a foul mood. When Yan Jiu came to report to her, she saw that his looks and figure were exactly to her taste. On a whim, she took him to vent her frustration.

Now, looking back, all she remembered was how he knelt by the bed and served her in silent submission. Even when she had played with him until he bled, he never cried out in pain or begged her to stop.

When she opened her eyes, Shen Lingchun had become the sickly legitimate daughter of a marquis's household. It was the second year after the Eldest Princess's death.

She thought that in this life she would enjoy herself more. Remembering the man's back before her coffin, Shen Lingchun figured Yan Jiu had been quite handy in her previous life, so she went to look for him.

But could someone explain why the covert guard who had been taciturn and silently obedient before her in her previous life turned out to be the mighty General Su'an, who had long been famous for always wearing a mask?

Behind the red gauze curtains, Shen Lingchun leaned against a soft couch and took a freshly peeled grape from Yan Jiu's hand.

The tall man, usually cold-faced and ruthless, knelt beside the bed, his breathing unsteady and his body covered in marks she had left behind.

"How did you recognize me?" Shen Lingchun asked languidly.

The man lowered his eyes and replied respectfully in a husky voice, "A dog naturally recognizes its master."
