The Honeymoon Phase

After my boyfriend's mother offers me five million to leave her son, I run away while pregnant.

Five years later, Wei Chining tells Wei Wei earnestly, "Sweetie, it's not that I don't want you to find your dad, but think about it: every time we meet, Grandma has to give us five million. If it happens too often, Grandma will get stressed out."

Little Wei Wei looks up at her, wide-eyed and confused. "Oh..."

Everyone in H City knows the Ji and Wei families can't stand each other. They live across the street from one another, with the Ji family calling the Wei family pretentious snobs and the Wei family saying the Ji family reeks of money.

Ji Yu'an and Wei Chining grow up together in this fiercely hostile atmosphere.

One night, while Wei Chining is doing her homework, pebbles keep hitting her window. She throws it open angrily and sees Ji Yu'an across the way, gesturing wildly as he confesses his feelings.

"Ningning, I like you. Let's get together!"

"Are you crazy?" Wei Chining slams the window shut.

Two years later, their relationship is exposed. Ji Yu'an's family sends him abroad in the middle of the night. Wei Chining sits in an elegant cafe, listening to Ji Yu'an's mother stir her coffee with an air of superiority.

"I've seen plenty of people like you. You just want money, don't you? I'll give you five million. Leave my son."

Wei Chining is at a loss. She touches her belly, and the next day she disappears without a trace.

When Ji Yu'an, far away overseas, hears the news, he goes mad.

Five years later, Wei Chining leaves the flower shop after work. The night is dark. Cigarette butts litter the ground across the street, and a tall, grown man with bloodshot eyes blocks her way home. He carefully gathers her into his arms, his voice almost pleading. "Ningning, will you come home with me? I can protect you now."
